Dr. Jacob R. Marcus will
speak for the Temple Beth
El "Focus '78" program
series at services 8:30 p.m.
Dec. 15 at the temple, an-
nounces Josephine Bloom, a
temple vice president and
chairman of the "Foci's '78"
committee.
Dr. Marcus will speak on
"The World at 2000." Rabbi
Richard C. Hertz will pre-
sent Temple Beth El's first
Himelhoch Award to Dr.
Marcus . "for his outstanding
contributions as an author
and a teacher of American
Jewish history."
Dr. Mracus is Distin-
guished Service Professor in
American Jewish history at
the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, Cincinnati. He
also is the director of the
American Jewish Archives
and of the American Jewish
Periodical Center.
Dr. Marcus was or-
dained at the Hebrew
Union College and
studied at the University
of Cincinnati, Lane
Theological Seminary
and the University of
Chicago, and attended
academies in Europe. He
received his PhD degree
from the University of
Berlin and continued his
graduate work in Paris
and Jerusalem.
He has received honorary
LLD degrees from the Uni-
versity of Cincinnati and
Dropsie College in
Philadelphia, and DHL de-
grees from Spertus College

He is the editor of the
semi-annual American
Jewish Archives and the
author of a series of books
important in Jewish life and
letters.
Dr. Marcus is a past
president and the honor-
ary president of the Cen-
tral Conference of
American Rabbis. He is a
past president and an
honorary president of the
American Jewish Histor-
ical Society whose an-
nual Lee M. Friedman
Medal was awarded him
for his distinguished
service in the field of
American Jewish his-
tory.
Dr. Marcus is a trustee, a
former vice president of the
Jewish Publication Society
of America, and chairman of
its subcommittee on Ameri-
can Jewish history. He was
a charter member of the
board of governors of the
training bureau for Jewish
Communal Service. He re-
ceived the Frank L. Weil
Award from the National
Jewish Welfare Board "for
his contributions to Ameri-
can Jewish culture."
