Circumcision Rites Defined

4f9rrnia9t0.1:hilii

It is customary to have a
festive meal following a cir-.
cumcision.
According to some au-
thorities this practice is de-
rived from the biblical pas-
sage in the Book of Genesis
which states that Abraham
made a party for his son.
• Others claim that it is
generally customary to
have or to partake in a fes-
tive meal when celebrating
the performance of a great
mitzva (such as circumci-
sion) because, in doing such
a virtuous deed, one is fulfil-
ling the covenant which Ab-
raham made with the Al-
mighty.
A meal is an exercise
which celebrates the cove-
nantal relationship bet-
ween the Almighty and the
people of Israel. In the prac-
tice of circumcision, as evi-
dent from the nature of the
benediction pronounced by
the father of the boy,
another Jew is being
brought into this historic
covenantal relationship.
It is customary to put
some wine on the lips of
the. infant during the
prayers which follow the
act of circumcision.
Since the prayers and be-
nedictions which are recited
following the act of circum-
cision are for the sake of the
child, putting some wine to
