Griffin Defends, Levin Attacks
Senator's M.E. Voting Record
In his 202-page documen-
tary defending his voting
record, Sen. Robert Griffin
makes this comment on the
role he played in matters af-
fecting the Middle East:
"Sen. Griffin spoke out
strongly on the Senate floor
in support of the Israeli-
Egyptian Sinai Accord in
1975, and has supported
other efforts by the United
States to promote a peaceful
resolution of the tragic dis-
pute.
. "A strong supporter of
Israel — for which he has
voted to provide more
than $10 billion in var-
ious forms of assistance
since 1973 — he had also
supported efforts to im-
prove relations with the
more moderate Arab
states.
"Outlining his views on
the Middle East in July
1978, Sen. Griffin stated:
"Above all else, we must
exert out influence in the
interest of peace.
"Of course, the United
States cannot solve unilat-
erally the problems of the
Middle East. For any
negotiated agreement to
succeed, all of the parties to

such an agreement must
recognize that peace is in
their own best interest.
"A final settlement can-
not — and should not — be
imposed on the region from
afar by Great Powers.
". . On the other
hand, there are several
ways our country can
work to enhance the
prospects of peace. For
example, when we em-
phasize our commitment
to the survival of Israel,
we also reduce the temp-
tation for militant Arab
states to seek a military
solution.
"If the United States is to
serve as a moderator and
`honest broker,' of course it
is also essential that we deal
fairly and honestly with the
moderate Arab states that
indicate a sincere interest
in achieving peace."
Griffin's statement and
voting record on the Middle
East was attacked by his
opponent, Carl Levin. Levin
cited Griffin's vote favoring
the sale of U.S. jet aircraft to
Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Levin listed six Senate
resolutions in support of
Israel between 1969 and
1974 which Griffin did
not endorse. He also
listed five appropriation
bills affecting Israel since
1976 on which Griffin did
not vote.
Massachusetts Sen. Ed-
ward Kennedy will appear
at a Levin reception at the
Plaza Hotel Sunday eve-
ning.
In the latest public opin-
ion poll, Levin's lead over
Griffin increased to seven
perCentage points. Levin
has taken a 50-43 percent-
age lead with seven percent -
still undecided.
Later this week, Griffin
announced that he _ had
joined 27 other Senators in
SHEL ROTT
ORCHESTRA
urging President Carter to
cut off U.S. funds for a UN
unit planning -a $500,000
public relations campaign
promoting Palestinian
rights.
