Torczyner has been a
leader in the Zionist
movement for more than
30 years. Born in Bel-
gium, where his father
was President of the Bel-
gian Zionist Federation,
Torczyner was the editor
of the official publication
of the Federation from
1937 until the war.
He came to the United
States in 1940 and affiliated
with the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America. He was one
of the 18 persons who met
with David Ben-Gurion on
July 1, 1945, to initiate the
movement of the Friends of
the Hagana which or-
ganized the support for the
Jewish defense forces in
Palestine.
Torczyner served five
consecutive terms as
President of the Zionist
Organization of America
and was chairman of the
American Section of the
World Jewish Congress. He
has attended all Zionist
congresses since 1946 and
was a member of the
Presidium of the World
Zionist Actions Committee
from 1956 to 1972. At the
28th World Zionist Con-
gress held in Jerusalem in
1972, Torczyner was elected
a member of the Executive
of the World Zionist Organ-
ization.
In 1974, he assumed the
chairmanship of the
Theodor Herzl Institute,
which is the only adult edu-
cation center in the world
Zionist movement. He is
co-president of the World
Union of General Zionists of
which he had been a vice
president for the last 15
years.
He was also a founder
and organizer of the
American-Israel Cham-
ber of Commerce, of
of which he is now a vice
president. He was a
founding member of the
board of governors of the
State of Israel Bonds; is a
trustee of the board of the
United Israel Appeal; a
member of the governing
council of the World
Jewish Congress; and a
member of the national
advisory board of the

enabling them to attend
Hebrew-speaking camps
and educational programs
in Israel as well as teacher
training institutes.
