JNF staff conference New York. Kaplan received
the award "for distinguished service and the attain-
ment of his fund-raising goals in support of land re-
clamation and afforestation in Israel." Making the

assembly, which is expected
to attract some 300 Jewish
community leaders from
Kentucky, Indiana, Michi-
gan and Ohio.
Conference co-chairmen
are Edie Mittenthal and
Merle Harris.
Theme of the 1979 cam-
paign, according to
Tauber, is "Jewish Re-
newal at Home and Over-
seas." A number of key
conference sessions, in-
cluding a noon presenta-
tion by former Detroiter
and UJA National
Chairman Irwin S. Field,
will stress "Project Re-
newal," a major program
of social rejuvenation in
Israel for 300,000 immig-
rants in distressed urban
neighborhoods.
Total cost of the project
has been estimated at $1.2
billion, with American Jew-
ry's share set at $400 mil-,
lion. The 1979 campaign
launches the first phase of
the program, covering 30 of
the 160 target neighbor-
hoods.
The conference program
will include -a colloquy on
current affairs in Israel and
the Middle East . conducted
by Uri Ra'anan, professor of
international politics at the
Fletcher School of Law and
Diplomacy, and Dr. John D.
Stoessinger, professor of
political science at the City
University of New York;
seminars on Soviet Jewry
and Arab propaganda; and
campaign workshops cover-
ing solicitation techniques,
cash collection approaches
and public relations re-
sources.
The Detroit hospitality
committee for the confer-
ence is chaired by Hugh and
Carolyn Greenberg and in-
cludes Robert and Susan
Citrin, Martin and Sharon
Hart, Robert and Donna
Slatkin and Mrs. Esther
Jones. Also assisting are
Jonathan Jaffa and Burton
Farbrnan.
