PHILIP ROTH

NEW YORK — Philip
Roth's best-selling novel,
"The Professor of Desire,"
was published this month as
a paperback by Bantam
Books.
It is the story of David
Kepesh, an adventurous
man of feeling and intelli-
gence, a hedonist hampered
by conscience and caution,
trying to find a balance be-
tween the pursuit of the
flesh and the cultivation of
the mind.
'The Professor of Desire"
begins with the early years
of Kepesh who grows up at
his family's Jewish resort in
the Catskills. Pushed to-
ward academic success by
his parents, David becomes
a studious young man, de-
stined for the scholarly life
until he enters college.
There his desire erupts and
is realized during his year
abroad.
Back home again,
Kepesh accepts a teach-
ing position in California
and marries a beautiful
young graduate student
whose life in the Orient
challenges his own
capacity for fantasy. Yet,
her attempts at making
dreams reality destroy
their marriage.
Divorced and living in
New York, Kepesh tries to
make some sense of his life.
His mother dies; he becomes
impotent; he goes into
analysis. He is overcome by
despair until he meets
Claire Ovington who repre-
sents his opportunity for
permanent love and happi-
ness, and a chance to bring
together the many different

educational programs, 43
central communal agen-
cies for Jewish education
and 15 teacher training
colleges, as well as 105
public high schools that
offer Hebrew.
Arthur Brody, president
of the AAJE, said the rise in
the number of day schools is
"particularly significant in
light of a pronounced de-
cline in Jewish supplemen-
tary (Sunday and after-
noon) schools over the same
five-year period."
There
are
2,169
supplementary schools re-
corded in the directory,
Brody said, 12.3 percent
fewer than the 2,473 listed
in the 1973 edition.
The AAJE president
attributed the decrease
in the number of
supplementary schools,
in large measure, to the
closing or amalgamation
of congregational
schools resulting from
"demographic patterns
and economic pressures
which have become in-
creasingly prevalent in
recent years within the
Jewish community."

Brody said that many
schools operated by congre-
gations "have been discon-
tinued because of enroll-
ment declines which paral-
lel a drop in the Jewish
birthrate, and that others
located in urban areas have
closed their doors as young
couples move to suburbia
and exurbia."
