WHERE WOULD YOU

go to find a copy of your old
high school annual, back is-
sues of Architectural Di-
gest, a first edition of Emil
Ludwig's "Napoleon" or a
50-year-old cookbook?
The 17th annual Bran-
deis Used Book Sale, Michi-
gan's largest, will feature
over 100,000 volumes in the
annual event sponsored by
the Brandeis University
National Women's Commit-
tee, Greater Detroit Chap-
ter.
For the second straight
year, sale by the gals will be
held at Tel-12 Mall . . .
Aug. 31 through Sept. 6 dur-
ing regular mall hours . .
with a special preview sale
Aug. 30, 9:30 p.m. til mid-
night . . . Advance tickets
to the preview'($2.50) can be
gotten from Brandeis vol-
unteers at the mall Monday
through Wednesday before
the sale . . . Admission to
the rest of the biggie sale is
free.

There's a three-fold ef-
fort attached to the book
bartering . . .It gives the
public an opportunity to
buy good books at bar-
gain prices . . . recycles
unsold books by donat-
ing them to schools,
community groups, pris-
ons and hospitals . . .
and uses the proceeds to
support and maintain the
Brandeis University lib-
raries.

Processing 100,000 vol-
umes is a year-long task
. . . Work on the 1978 sale,
for example, began in Sep-
tember 1977, with volun-
teers garnering books from
private citizens, estates and
organizations at the Bran-
deis Book Store . .. There,
in a room resembling a
storefront library, the las-
sies sorted books onto plain
wood shelves labeled music,
fiction, history, etc. . . .
The books were then priced
and boxed for storage until
sale time.
Though book store work
is often dusty, it is not with-
out rewards . .. Volunteer
discoveries range from a
valuable first edition to a
children's book inscribed
with the name of a former
playmate to an oddity like
the 1909 volume, "Toasts"
by Margaret Waters . . .
Among the toasts is this
two-liner: "Here's to the
auto — may we hear its toot
in time to scoot."

Books are sorted into
more than 50 categories
including art, biography,
business and finance,
children's books, foreign
language, history,
humor, law, medicine,
mystery, poetry, religion,
sports, hobbies, travel
and science fiction . . .
Paperback books,
specialized magazines,
records and sheet music
are also represented.

Dorothy Kaufman is book
sale chairman . . . assisted

"Ann and Dr. I. Walter
Silver picked up Roberta
Peters, appearing at recent
Balfour Concert, and her
husband at the airport . . .
Took them to Sherator-
