MICHAEL MICHL1N
An educator associated

with the United Hebrew
Schools for 59 years — he
was the principal of the
Parkside, Bagley, Adat
Shalom and Beth Abraham
branches of the Greater De-
troit Jewish school system
— he was at the same time
actively involved in Zionist
tasks and in efforts for Is-
rael after the rebirth of the
Jewish state.
From the earliest years
of the founding of the
Jewish National Fund
Council 60 years ago, he
held official JNF posi-
tions and served for
many years as financial
secretary of the JNF.

He gained distinction as
an archivist and in the half
century of his activities he
gathered many valuable
documents relating to De-
troit Jewish community in-
terests. (See Commentary
on Page 2)
Mr. Michlin has had to
his credit a long long list of
eminent men who studied in
the Hebrew schools under
his tutelage, many also hav-
ing benefited from his pri-
vate tutoring.
As a Hebraist he was
among the organizers
and leaders of Kvutzah
Ivrit, the Hebrew Cul-
tural Society, and he led
it as president and in
other official roles. Until
his the last year of his life
he participated in many
of the cultural meetings
of the Kvutzah Ivrit.
His devotion to Israel was
indiscriminate. He even
was active, with his wife
Chana, in Pioneer Women's
Organization and served
the movement as secretary
and financial secretary.
He graduated from the
Detroit Teachers College
and began teaching in the
United Hebrew Schools
when they were founded in
1919. He helped organize
the Hebrew Teachers as-
sociation and became its
first president.
Mr. Michlin also was a
member of the Labor Zionist
Alliance.
