TAU Scientists Devise Index to Rate Weather Discomfort
TEL AVIV — Tel Aviv
University Prof. Ezra Zohar
and Dr. Yair Shapiro have
introduced to the Israeli
public a new concept in
beating the heat: a weather
forecast which includes a
discomfort index.
The discomfort index, a
hot weather counterpart of
the American winter "wind
chill factor" concept, re-
fleets the impact of the heat,
not only in terms of temper-
atures, but in terms of the
actual discomfort felt, due
to other factors, primarily
humidity.
The discomfort index —
light, moderate or heavy —
is predicted according to the
hours of the day, so that Is-
raelis — the athletes, the
day camp director, the army
officer — can plan their ac-
tivities accordingly and
avoid strenuous activity.

parts of the country.
Although Israel is a
small country, all of
which is characterized by
a long, hot summer, it ac-
tually has four different
weather zones with
temperature differences
of 20° (68° F) and with
very different discomfort
indexes that sometimes

Dr. Shapiro says that
most of the modern settle-
ment of Israel was done by
settlers from Eastern
Europe who had lived in
cold climates. As a result,
they made and still make
mistakes in coping with Is-
rael's hot climate. Their
choice of areas of settle-
ment, for example, gener-
ally ignored the weather
discomfort factor. Original
Jewish settlements in Israel
for centuries were concen-
trated in the most comfort-
able areas, such as Safed
and Jerusalem.

THE SYNAGOGUE COUNCIL OF GREATER DETROIT
Robert A. Steinberg, President
The heritage of Judaism has been transmitted from generation to generation thru the SYNAGOGUE for 2000 years. Great
changes are taking place in the United States today among our brethen, especially our young people, concerning their
identification as Jews. Only one institution can insure the preservation of Judaism in this country — THE SYNAGOGUE, the
central institution of Jewish life which continues to serve as a House of Prayer, House of Study and House of Assembly. For the
sake of your children, as well as your own identification with our faith, we urge you to become affiliated with one of the
synagogues listed below.
THE POLICY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SYNAGOGUE COUNCIL IS THAT NO FAMILY WILL BE TURNED AWAY FROM
SYNAGOGUE MEMBERSHIP BECAUSE OF LIMITED FINANCIAL CIRCUMSTANCES. A most cordial welcome will be
extended to all who desire affiliation with a SYNAGOGUE.
