THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Shapiro, 87, Compiles Writings
Joseph Shapiro is not a
stranger to Detroiters. He
has been heard as storytel-
ler at meetings of the
Jewish War Veterans and
his letters to the editors of
newspapers, in defense of
Jewish rights, and his
poems, have been accepted
for publication_
His family is proud of his
labors and they are among
the many who applaud the
man who on Oct. 25 will
reach his 88th birthday.
He is a devout Jew. He
observes the Sabbath,
has attended services
regularly at Cong. Beth
Moses on Evergreen be-
fore it was sold a few
weeks ago, and since
then attends Cong. Beth
Shalom services, having
moved to that area to be
within walking distance
as a Sabbath observer.
He tells his own story in a
autobiographical note:
"(I was) educated in Lon-
don, passing all English
public school grades. (I)
wanted to be a writer after
quitting school, and went to
work three years on a farm,
where I started to do some
writing.
"(I) came to Boston,
Mass., in 1912, and joined
the Ametican Merchant
Marine, and started a four-
year tour, working on ships
that sailed to many foreign
seaports.
"(I) came to Detroit in
1916, and found work in a
department store. (In) June
1917 I registered for the
World War One draft, and
eventually found myself
fighting the Germans in Fr-
ance.

Torah Retreats
Enrollment Up
NEW YORK — Record
enrollment of 9,500 chil-
dren are participating in
Torah education programs
at 31 summer all-day and
sleepaway camps operated
in various parts of the world
under the auspices of the in-
ternational Agudath Israel
movement, it was an-
nounced by Meir Frischman
of the Camps Commission of
Agudath Israel of America.
The vacation retreats,
most of which bear the
name Camp Agudah (for
boys) or Camp Bnos (for
girls) are located in New
York's Catskill Mountains,
Canada, Argentina, Eng-
land, Israel, Belgium, Swit-
zerland and Italy. Israel's
camping operations consist
of nearly 16 camps, the
largest of which is Chazon
Yechezkel.
The American Agudath
Israel camps have expanded
their special programs for
children from 26 cities, in
addition to a large contin-
gent from Central Ameri-
can countries. The camps
also maintain special prog-
rams for children from
Jewishly uncommitted
homes, who are recruited by
the Jewish Education Prog-
ram (JEP) of Zeirei
Agudath Israel.
and for my duties per-
formed and being gassed
twice by the Germans, I
was presented with the
Military Order of the
Purple Heart Medal.
"After returning to
America, I got a job at the
Ford Motor Co. and worked
there as a toolmaker for 37
years, retiring at the age of
65 in 1955.
"After a while I started to
write, but not for finances
but merely as a hobby which
I have kept up until today."
For more than 50 years
Shapiro was a 'Member of
the American Legion and
the Jewish War Veterans,
holding many positions. He
also is a member of the
Jewish Community Center
and contributes to its senior
adult publication, "The
Writer's Corner."
He has three children and
four grandchildren. His
wife Clara died in 1976.
Justly proud of his
JOSEPH SHAPIRO
many poetic and other
writings, Shapiro has
compiled a personal
book containing the
selections he views as his
best. As an indication of
the type of work the man
soon to be a nonagena-
rian produces is this
Poem, "Hear 0 Israel":

Begin Promise
to Sephardim
Is Renewed
NEW YORK — Prime
Minister Menahem Began
reaffirmed his promise of a
year ago by pledging his full
support for Project Re-
newal, the joint program of
the Israeli government and
Jewish Agency to aid the
45,000 Israeli families liv-
ing below the poverty line,
according to the American
Sephardi Federation.
The prime minister as-
serted that more must be
done to insure greater
Sephardi representation in
the government, Jewish
Agency and World Zionist
Organization.

We can call "Hear 0 Israel" the beginning or the end of a
prayer and yet the true meaning from my point of view, it
really means a "message."

Hear 0 Israel . . . when your daily work is done
Remember your prayers to the "Holy One."
It's an obligation, Jews should obey
To their "Creator" every day.
Hear 0 Israel ... no matter where you live
Traditions remind us, that we must give
Of ourselves, to charity, with an open hand
Charities of faith, we understand.
O
Hear 0 Israel . . . when this "prayer" is completed
Day after day, it certainly is repeated.
The words "Hear 0 Israel" is a message of old
Generation after generation, it has been told.

When you are ill and try to find
A way to get well, then you look above
You offer a prayer, with spiritual love.
Hear 0 Israel . . . the "Lord" our God, is one
It is chanted, when work is done
We stand in silence, blessing the Lord's name day after day
May our Creator hear our prayers, cometh what may.
Prize-Winning Cellist Rosen
Says He's Eager to See Israel
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Nathaniel Rosen, the 30-
year-old California cellist
who won a gold medal in the
recent Tchaikovsky com-
petition in Moscow against
rivals from 19 countries,
has never been to Israel and
he wants to get there as soon
as he can.
"I am looking forward
very much to go to Israel,"
he said. With a sense of an-
ticipation, the young cellist
added: "I am sure it will
happen. I want to make it
happen very soon."
Rosen, who talked
proudly of being from "a
Jewish family," spoke in the
Great Hall of the White
House where he and vio-
linist Elmar Oliveira, of
Hartford, Conn., were hon-
ored at a reception by Presi-
de.•t. and Mrs. Carter and
M s..Joan Mondale, the vice
pr sident's wife.
ttosen and Oliveira
were the first American
citizens to receive the
med:. .i in 20 years. I was
also the first time that
two Americans have won
in the same year.
Rosen never had his Bar
Mitzva because "I was so
busy practicing I didn't get
to cheder," he said. "My pa-
rents were worried about
my paternal grandfather
because I wasn't in cheder
preparing for the Bar
Mitzva but my grandfather
said, in Yiddish, that I can
as well establish my man-
hood with a cello as in a Bar
Mitzva ceremony."
While in Moscow, Soviet
musicians asked him if he
were Jewish, the young cel-
list said.
Born in Altadena, Calif.,
Rosen studied at Altadena
City College and the Uni-
versity of Southern Califor-
nia. Asked if he were af-
filiated with a Jewish or-
ganization, the cellist re-
plied, "No, I don't now but
my feeling is with the
brotherhood of the Jewish
people.
