Anti-Semitic Overtones in Letter
Assailing Book Reviewer Warsen
A letter to The Jewish
News purporting to be a
criticism of Jewish News
book reviewer Allen War-
sen, in the matter dealing
with anti-Semitism in Po-
land, emerges in and of it-
self as a shocking endorse-
ment of anti-Jewish pre-
judice.
Benedict Markowski,
who wrote the introduction
to "Behold the Polish
Americans" by Joseph A.
Wytrwal, the book reviewed
by Warsen, is the author of
the letter. His introductory
comments to the book av-
oided resorting to prejudice.
His letter, twice as long as
the Warsen review, is filled
with allusions to Jewish
malpractices, charges Jews
with having collaborated
with the Nazis and evades
the blame that has been
traced to Polish anti-
Semitic practices during,
before and after the World
War II period.
The Markowski letter
even contends that Jews did
not assist the Polish under-
ground, questions both
Jewish loyalty and courage
and implies that the War-
saw Ghetto Uprising would
have failed if not for Polish
aid. The historic facts are
that the heroes of the War-
saw Ghetto had difficulty
getting aid in their struggle
to battle the Nazi army.
These are a few of the
incidents in a letter that is
as vitriolic as the book it
defends, a volume-
branded anti-Semitic by
book reviewer Warsen,
with the chapter entitled
"Polish-Jewish Relations
in America" concluding
with this paragraph:
"The current wave of ter-
rorism against the Jews —
not only in Israel, but in
other countries where they
are established — seems to
be the ultimate and periodic
reaction to Jewry's hatred of
the world's non-Jews. One
cannot offend others per-
petually, make them the
scapegoats, treat them with
impunity, and expect toler-
ation or respect.
"One cannot infringe on
their civil liberties by de-
manding an exaggerated

interpretation of the Bill of
Rights which endangers
other human lives and
shows no concern or care for
others civil liberties. The
Jew's selfish outlook at the
world will continue to reap a
harvest of bad seed until
their egomaniacal con.:-)^t

humanized into one for car-
ing about others — espe-

cess.
"It is this relentless
hatred which has inspired
the phenomenon of anti-
Semitism all over the world
wherever Jews have con-
centrated to become a social
problem."
Warsen expressed regret
that there should be a
spread of hatred by Ameri-
can Poles, instead of an ef-
fort to cement the best in
Polish-Jewish-American
relations.
