Disco Parries by

Twenty of Sarah
Winokur's friends joined
with the Oak Park resident
recently to celebrate her
80th birthday. The birthday
presents didn't go to Mrs.
Winokur. Instead, they
went to Israel.
The guests at the party
raised $150 for the Allied
Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund. "The
money goes to Israel," Mrs.
Winokur said. "The satis-
faction comes to me."
Giving money through
the Metropolitan Division
of the Campaign is nothing
new for Mrs. Winokur. She's
been doing it for as long as
she can remember. So far
this year, she has raised
$250 in a series of luncheons
she prepares and serves.
The luncheons are not
formal, but they are
elaborate, and every-
thing served, from halla
to dessert, is prepared by
Mrs. Winokur.
Mrs. Winokur's guests
know that they are not ex-
pected to bring presents,
food, or gifts to her lunches.
The only payment expected
of them is a donation to Is-
rael. The guests give what
they can, and come away
with full stomachs and full
hearts.
A native of Kiev in the
Ukraine, Mrs. Winokur
came to this country in 1923
with her husband and 31/2-

year - old son. Her son was
killed during Wolld War II,
and Mrs. Winokur has
never forgotten what he did
for his adopted country. "He
gave his life to his country,"
she says matter-of-factly.
I'm giving my life for Is-
rael."
Mrs. Winokur also has
two daughters, both born in
the United States. For her
75th birthday, her family
gave her a trip to Israel, the
only time she has seen the
country that means so much
to her.
