Irgun Backer Henryk Szeryng
Makes Israel His Major Cause

Henryk
Violinist
Szeryng, meeting with
friends and admirers after
another successful appear-
ance here at Meadow Brook
last Thursday, took occa-
sion to speak with pride of
his four decades of activities
on behalf of Israel and the
support he had given to the
Irgun during the struggle
for Israel's independence.
He continues his deep in-
terest in Herut and in the
leadership of Menahem Be-
gin, he stated.
Szeryng, who also ap-
peared here with the De-
troit Symphony Orchestra
earlier this year, was an or-
ganizer of the Palestine
Symphony Orchestra, now
the Israel Symphony, with
Bronislaw Huberman. His
interest in Zionism and Is-
rael remains unabated, he
declared, and a major por-
tion of his philanthropic
contributions goes to Israel.

Having left Poland for
France at the outbreak of
World War II. Szeryng set-
tled in Mexico, has been
honored there since acquir-
ing Mexican citizenship and
has been named a cultural
attache with ambassadorial
diplomatic status. He prizes
his diplomatic passport.
He grew up in ah at-
mosphere where Pales-
tine played a central
place. His father was a
major contributor to
Zionist causes in Poland.

A Hebrew University
scholarship bears his name
and he established a special
fund for the Israeli
Philharmonic Orchestra for
the purchasing of better
musical instruments. In
December 1972, he pre-
sented a $500,000

Russian Couple

to Renew Vows
in Jewish Rites

A special wedding cere-
mony will take place 8:30
p.m. Tuesday at Cong. Mis-
hkan Israel Nusach H'Ari
— Lubavitcher Center,
where a Russian Jewish
couple wed 20 years ago in a
civil ceremony will renew
their vows under a hupa.
Yaroslav and Dora Shor
will be married in a Jewish
religious ceremony by
Rabbi Meilich Silberberg,
spiritual leader of Cong.
Bais Chabad of West Bloom-
field.

Correction

An item appearing in last
week's Jewish News inad-
vertently left out the names
of some members of the
kashrut committee of the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis
of Detroit.
The committee includes
Rabbi Feivel Wagner and
Rabbi Shaiall Zachariash,
and executive committee
members Rabbis Leizer Le-
vin, James I. Gordon,
Joshua Sperka and Chaskel
Grubner.

During the 1967 and 1973
wars, Szeryng came to Is-
rael to entertain soldiers.
He has since given at least
one concert a year for the
soldiers' welfare fund.
For two months every
year he conducts a mas-
ter -class at the Mexican
National University and
is a recipient of the Grand
Prix du Disque.

HENRYK SZERYNG
lin to Jerusalem Mayor
Teddy Kollek.
The violin has been re-
named Kinor David (Lyre of
David) and is now being
used (according to his
wishes) by the two first con-
certmasters of the IPO and
by other outstanding Israeli
violinists on tour.

Szeryng took occasion
during his current appear-
ance to pay honor to Julius
Chajes whose compositions
he has played scores of
times.

He now urges Chajes,
whose earliest compositions
were done when he lived in
pre-Israel Palestine from
1934 to 1936, again to go to
Israel for a lengthy stay to
compose a concerto which
he hopes to include in his
future programs.
