ficial opening of "Blok 27,"
the "Jewish building" at
Auschwitz which the Polish
government has designated
as a permanent memorial.
The Detroit Service
Group Mission, under the
auspices of the United
Jewish Appeal, will take
place Sept. 12-27 and will
include Romania, as well as
Poland and Israel, on the
itinerary. There is an op-
tional four-day extension. A
few places remain on the
mission, and those in-
terested must contact the
DSG office (965-3939) im-
mediately so that visa ar-
rangements can be made.
Lawrence Jackier, a
member of the DSG Mis-
sions Committee who re-
cently visited Auschwitz,
said that it is vital to im-
press upon the Polish gov-
ernment the concern of
world Jewry that an ap-
propriate memorial be
maintained at the site
where so many Jews lost
their lives.
Jackier said that he
viewed Blok 27 soon after
it was dedicated on the
anniversary of the War-
saw Ghetto Uprising in
April. However, unlike
the other buildings at
Auschwitz which com-
memorate various
groups of ethnic and
political prisoners, Blok
27 was inadequately
marked and was kept
locked and guarded.
Only after his group in-
sisted, did the camp au-
thorities open the building.
There was very little elec-
tric power, and the exhibit
was only partially com-
pleted. All of the other
"Woks" were identified with
signs in five languages; the
Blok 27 sign was barely dis-
tinguishable.
If the Polish government
lives up to its pledge, the
exhibit will be completed by
the time the Detroiters visit
Poland, thus making them
the first Jewish group to see
the completed memorial.
Jackier said that the mis-
sion will present an ideal
opportunity to observe if the
postwar government of Po-
land is keeping alive the
memory of millions of Jews
who perished in the
Holocaust.

Passion Play
Protest Asked
Editor, The Jewish News:
The front page of your
paper issued June 9, 1978
carried an article concern-
ing the Passion Play pre-
sented in Oberammergau.
An article originally pub-
lished in Germany in
"Kieler Nachrichten" and
which I received in my copy
of The German Tribune de-
scribes the present play as
"Hitler's favorite version."
You will note from this
article that the Hitlerian
preference is for the version
described as having no
literary merit. In addition

"stubborness of the people of
Oberammergau is not so
much evidence of a living
sense of tradition as of a
rigid and retrograde way of
thinking." These are the
words of a German, Claus
Kolberg.
Hopefully the NCCJ
boycott effort may indeed be
successful.

In Translation
Editor, The Jewish News:
In Purely Commentary,
June 30, the Scriptural pas-
sage, "Netzakh Israel lo
Yeshaker," (I Samuel 15:29)
is not correctly translated
as "The Eternity of Israel
will not deceive," though
this fits your thesis. Rabbi
Herz renders it, "And also
the Glory of Israel will not
lie nor repent for He is not a
man that He should re-
pent." The reference is, of
course, to the Eternal.
Your conclusion, that the
cure of our social evils,
among which the plague of
intermarriage is perhaps
the worst, must follow the
road of "strictest adherence
to the legacies" of our na-
tion, is extremely valid.
