ter asked Gene Kelly,
"When did you first begin
liking girls? . . . Kelly's
immediate answer was,
"The minute I discovered
they weren't boys."
WORD IS THAT the
former Trio Restaurant on
Northwestern will become
an office building.
MAIL DEPT.. . . "Just
a note to leC you know that
the manager at the North-
land Theater is one of the
nicest and most polite
people."
"Couldn't some of your re-
staurants give a discount to
senior citizens?"
MUST TELL YOU about
a banana split we took out of
Howard Johnson's, 10 Mile
and Evergreen . . . Two lit-
tle scoops of mushy ice
cream, two small spoonsful
of flavoring, a tiny sprinkl-
ing of nuts, some cut up
banana and a mountain of
whipped cream to fill up the
half empty container . . .
$1.95. . . We live just down
the street on Southfield and
10 so didn't have to go far,
but when opening it up,
there was all goo and hardly
any ice cream left . . . Had
to mention this because we
remember making real-
banana splits when work-
ing at Kaufman Drugs on
12th St.

"Restaurant owners may be
able to capitalize on grow-
ing consumer resentment
over acutely noticeable ris-
ing food prices in the
supermarket by more ag-
gressively promoting value,
and by holding the line on
prices under the inflation
burden.
"As a psychological reac-
tion to supermarket prices,
consumers could turn more
to restaurants, where prices
do not fluctuate as fre-
quently as they do in the
supermarket, and therfore
seem more stable to the in-
creasingly value-conscious
customer.
The challenge to food
service operators is in their
ability to hold the line on
prices, even though their
own costs are suffering
under rising inflation."

TIE, morning waitress at

PICKING THE BEST

from Food For Thought by
Consumers For Pure Food
. . .
"Bananas, unlike other
fruits, develop their best
eating quality after har-
vesting. Buy them green or
partially green so you know
they aren't gassed into
phony ripeness.
"LOOK FOR: Bananas
free from surface bruises
with skin intact at both tips.
The stage of ripeness is in-
dicated by the color. Ripen
them at room temperature
and when the yellow jacket
is speckled with brown, the
starch will be changed to
fruit sugar and fruit will be
tender, sweet, and easy to
digest.
"AVOID: Bananas that
are bruised, discolored, or
dull and grayish which
means that they have been
held in cold storage and will
never ripen properly.
"TIPS: Although for
years Chiquita has been tel-
ling people to keep bananas
at room temperature, once
they are ripe they can be
stored very successfully in
the refrigerator. This way
you can keep bananas ready
to eat for several days. Do
not place them in cold stor-
age, however, until they are
as ripe as you want them to
be. Although the skin will
turn brown in the re-
frigerator the fruit itself
will remain unchanged."

DETROIT PLAZA

Hotel, Nemo's Saloon and
the Renaissance Center
Partnership are jointly
sponsoring a series of 12
outdoor concerts featuring
top-name entertainment.
This concert series, called
"Renaissance Live!" made
its debut June 21 on top of
the west podium deck
in Renaissance Center . . .
offering another dimension
to the already-thriving
musical scene in downtown
Detroit.
NOTE TO . . . caterers
and florists . . . about all
those flowers you throw
away after weddings and
other functions . .
Wouldn't it be a wonderful
gesture if you sent them in-
stead to the Jewish Home
For the Aged at Borman
Hall and Prentis Manor?
. . . They would really
brighten up the rooms . . .
and the lives of these elderly
people.
