research project at the fa-
culty of agriculture in Re-
hovot.
Two Hebrew University
researchers, Dr. Ben Ami
Bravdo and Dr. Arye Gur,
with doctoral student
Joseph Hepner, undertook a
study of the problem as part
of a major research project
on wine growing fmanced
by the Eugene Schoen-
berger Memorial Founda-
tion and by Israeli wine
growers and producers.

In a two-year study on
effects of irrigation and
fruit thinning treatments
on the quality of grapes,
the Hebrew University
scientists found that a
reduction of yields may
bring about a rise in wine
quality. They manipu-
lated yields by removing
part of the grape bunches
from the vines. Vin-
eyards of the "Carig-
nane" variety responded
well to this fruit thinning
treatment, combining an
only slightly lower yield

Charges Backed
Against Nazi

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA)
— The Polish Embassy in
Brasilia is distributing a
document charging alleged
Nazi war criminal Gustav
Franz Wagner with respon-
sibility for the murders of
two million Jews from Po-
land, Hungary, Belgium,
Holland, Germany and
Greece at the Sobibor con-
centration camp in Poland
during World War II.
The document, prepared
by the Polish news agency,
said that
Interpress,
Wagner was personally
promoted by Gestapo chief
Heinrich Himmier to de-
puty commandant of the
camp because of the murder
and torture of Jewish adults
and children at his hands.
Wagner, a resident of Sao
Paulo since 1950, was ar-
rested in May after requests
for his detention were re-
ceived from West Germany,
Austria, Poland and Israel.
So far, Israel is the only
country that has filed a for-
mal extradition request.

Boycott Leader
Retired or Ousted?

LONDON (JTA) —
Mohammed Mahgoub,
commissioner_general of the
Arab League's Israel
Boycott Office since its crea-
tion in the early 1950s, has
retired following reports of
pressure by Egypt and
Saudi Arabia.
According to the Arab
League, Mahgoub has given
up the job solely because he
is over retirement age.
However, it was reported
last December that Egypt
would propose his replace-
ment following his criticism
of Egypt for allowing the
Ford Motor Co. to set up a
factory in Egypt in contra-
vention of boycott regula-
tions.
Saudi Arabia was also
said to prefer somebody
more "realistic" for this
highly sensitive post. He
was succeeded by his deputy
Sayyid Al-Barkai.

with a better quality
wine.

Another finding was that
generous watering during
harvest time impaired the
quality of the grape juice
and hence the wine. When
water was reduced a month
before and through the har-
vest season, the wine was of
relatively higher quality.
Laboratory methods were
developed to test the aroma-
tic substances which play a
major role in determining
taste. Aromatic components
of the wine were extracted
by volatile solvents which
are fluxed through the wine
for 18 hours and the es-
sences are collected as a
small volume fluid. This
fluid is injected into a gas
chromatograph which sepa-
rates chemical substances
and shows them as separate
peaks on a graph.

These chemical com-
ponents have to be corre-
lated to the tasting scores
by computer methods.
Some good correlations
have been obtained, and
this research is being
continued.

Officials to Unveil
Magen David Unit

TEL AVIV — The
groundbreaking cere-
monies of the new Magen
David Adorn Israel Na-
tional Blood Center
scheduled to take place Oct.
22, will be attended by top
Israeli government offi-
cials, a delegation of Ameri-
can Red Magen David for Is-
rael leaders, representa- _
tives from the Israel De-
fense Forces, civil defense,
police and health-related
agencies who work closely
with MDA on a day-to-day
basis.
Mrs. Nathan Goldman,
ARMDI co-chairman of the
new blood center campaign,
and Milton Lambert, presi-
dent ARMDI Chicago Chap-
ter, will head the U.S. dele-
gation to Israel.
The government of Israel
has specially allocated two
acres of land and given its
full support to Magen David
Adorn, Israel's National Red
Cross Society, to build the
new blood center in Tel
Aviv.

This

new method,
evaluating the aromatic
substances in wine more ob-
jectively than the tradi-
tional wine tapter may be-
come an asset to Israel's
growing wine industry,
which like other wine pro-
ducing countries so far has
relied solely on human
judgment of wine quality.
