Detroiter on Panel
on Drug Standards

DENVER—Dr. • Sidney
Friedlaender of the Wayne
State University School of
Medicine in Detroit is
among- the members of an
independent panel of medi-
cal experts, appointed by
the U.S. government and
headed by Dr. Richard S.
Farr of the National Jewish
Hospital and Research Cen-
ter in Denver, which has
urged tough new govern-
ment - standards for bacte-
rial vaccines and 'similar
products.
The recommendations,
which. involve both potency
and safety of the products,
are part of a report pub-
lished by the U.S. Food and
Drug.Administration.
The -pahel urged that bac-
terial vaccines and antigens
no longer be permitted on
the market in the United
States unless they meet -ne.w
standards for. potency and
safety, comparable to re-
quirements of FDA for oth-
er biological products. _
Under the proposal, both
new and existing products
would have to pass a
lengthy series of new tests.
Recognizing that such in-
vestigations may be
"...beyond - the capability of
some of the manufacturers
involved, - the panel called
for government financing of
the medical investigations,
and would allow six years
for those tests to be com-
pleted on existing products.
FDA Commissioner Donald
Kennedy said he agreed
with the recommendations,
and asked for public com-
ments on the proposal.

PLO Office Hit

BRUSSELS (JTA)—Bel-
gian political circles and the
Jewish community of
Luxembourg have strongly
criticized the announcement
made by the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization repre-
sentative in Belgium that
Luxembourg had agreed for
the Brussels PLO informa-
tion office to extend its ac-
tivities to its territory.
The Luxembourg 'govern-
ment did not officially an-
nounce the news but a com-
munique published by the
PLO office here said it wel-
comed its initiative.
