Farr of the National Jewish Hospital and Research Cen- ter in Denver, which has urged tough new govern- ment - standards for bacte- rial vaccines and 'similar products. The recommendations, which. involve both potency and safety of the products, are part of a report pub- lished by the U.S. Food and Drug.Administration. The -pahel urged that bac- terial vaccines and antigens no longer be permitted on the market in the United States unless they meet -ne.w standards for. potency and safety, comparable to re- quirements of FDA for oth- er biological products. _ Under the proposal, both new and existing products would have to pass a lengthy series of new tests. Recognizing that such in- vestigations may be "...beyond - the capability of some of the manufacturers involved, - the panel called for government financing of the medical investigations, and would allow six years for those tests to be com- pleted on existing products. FDA Commissioner Donald Kennedy said he agreed with the recommendations, and asked for public com- ments on the proposal.
