Felix Frankfurter Recalled

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —
The memory of Supreme
Court Justice Felix Frank-
furter was revived Oct. 21
with an exhibit of Frank-
furter memorabilia at the
Harvard Law School.
A memorial meeting
there united his former law
clerks, former students and
his sole surviving relative,
his sister, Stella Frank-

FELIX FRANKFURTER

furter, writes Israel Shen-
ker in The New York
Times.
"One shared the excite-
ment of his days," said Har-
vard Law's Prof. Paul
Freund, who was one of the
two people Justice Frank-
furter designated to speak
at his funeral in 1965.
Freund recalled the justice,
a short man once described
as mostly head, eyes and
glasses." Frankfurter was
an energetic, enthusiastic
man who also possessed
"effervescent charm,"
according to Freund.
As the "hub of Harvard"
and even after he entered
the Supreme Court in 1939,
Frankfurter would delegate
proteges to run affairs,

people like Thomas G. Cor-
coran, Benjamin V. Cohen,
James M. Landis, Dean
Acheson, who became
known as Frankfurter's
"Happy Hot Dogs."
On display in the law
library's treasure room is a
draft of the Brown vs.
Board of Education dese-
gregation decision on which
Frankfurter had penciled
suggestions for Chief Jus-
tice Earl Warren, including
the phrase "with all deliber-
ate speed," noting that seg-
regated school systems
must be terminated. Erika
S. Chadbourn, curator of
manuscripts and archives,
noted that the phrase was
borrowed from a 1912 opin-
ion by Justice Holmes,
something Frankfurter
would have been proud to
acknowledge.
Holmes treasured Frank-
furter's friendship, and in a
letter on display he wrote:
"I feel very great sympathy
for all that you say and long
to talk to you."
Philip Elman, another
former law clerk spoke of
Frankfurter's depth of love
for his country, and noted
the justice's knowledge of
the importance of sticking
to principles.
"He could tell me these
Jewish expressions his
mother used to use," Elman
said. "Then Elliot Richard-
son came on as clerk and he
was lost."
Elman also revealed the
justice's telephone code for
various colleagues, designa-
ting them by humorous
names.
When Frankfurter's sister
Stella was asked if she got
along with her brother, she
replied, "We were pals,"
and then gave away more of
the code : "I was Telly and
he was Filly."
