Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg,
of the American Jewish
Congress, recently spoke on
"Spinoza, the first modern
Jew." He said that Ben-
Gurion's demand for an his-
torical review and cancella-
tion of the ex-commu-
nication cast upon Spinoza
was just so much "public
relations."
The Sephardic beth din
which cast the young Spin-
oza into cherem in 1656 in
Amsterdam did so, said
Hertzberg, for good and ad-
equate reason.
It was based on their stud-
ied opinion that Baruch
Spinoza, who denied the au-
thority of Revelation, was a
kofar b'ikor, a denier of the
basic tenet of Judaism and,
therefore, a heretic.

Poster-Size Letter
Sent to Carter
by Israel Family
The M. Ben-Horin family
of Savyon, Israel, really
knows how to get a point
across.
In a poster-sized letter to
President Carter, with cop-
ies sent to American, Is-
raeli, Arab and European
leaders, the family has urg-
ed the President to support
the "few remaining free,
democratic and humane
countries" in the world, es-
pecially Israel.
The blue and white poster
shows land size com-
parisons between the U.S.
and the United Arab Emi-
rates and Europe, between
Israel and the Arab states
and between Georgia and
Israel. There are population
comparisons, a suggested
solution to the Palestinian
issue and more.
Relics Uncovered
JERUSALEM—A rock-
cut Roman aqueduct which
supplied the ancient village
of Emmaus with water, was
recently unearthed in Israel
by volunteers from the Beth
Shemesh high school. The
Jewish National Fund's
Canada Park, situated near
Emmaus, where Judas
Maccabaeus won a striking
victory against the Seleucid
Greeks in 165 BCE, is yield-
ing new finds faster than
they can be evaluated.
School children taking
part in a Jewish National
Fund cultural program are
aiding in the restoration of
the park's antiquities under
the supervision of trained
archeologists.
Wreath Is Laid
at Chilean Forest
JERUSALEM—In honor
of Chile's Independence
Day, Chilean Ambassador
to Israel Jorge Gahna As-
tman visited the Bernardo
O'Higgins Forest planted by
the Jewish National Fund in
the hills of Jerusalem. Am-
bassador Astman placed a
wreath of flowers on the
forest marker com-
memorating the Chilean na-
tional hero. .

Gazelle Study
to Aid Farmers
HAIFA — Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology biol-
ogists have completed a
wildlife study that will help
protect farmers from crop
damage, while preserving
the country's gazelle popu-
lation.
The study recommended
setting aside a grazing area
and selective reduction of
the herd in the Galilee. In
the Negev, it was recom-
mended that grazing corn-
petition with Bedouin goats
be controlled and stronger
action be taken to stop

Driver Shortage
.
TUNIS (ZINS) — Syria is
about to receive the first of
1,000 buses it has ordered,
but Damascus officials have
a shortage of drivers.
To put all . the buses in
use, Damascus alone would
need 1,500 more drivers.
The city now has 327 buses,
but 114 have been declared
a public hazard because of
their age.
Association for Jewish Edu-
cation (AAJE) to determine
whether, in educational jar-
gon, extensive Jewish sec-
ondary schooling has -a
"positive residual effect" on
later adult Jewish lifestyle,
attitudes, values and behav-
ior patterns.
The study showed that
adults who had graduated
from Jewish secondary
schools—comNred to those
with little or no Jewish edu-
cation—were more obser-
vant and active in the syna-
gogue,. belonged to r
Jewish organizations, -
more knowledgeable about
Jewish issues contributed
more to Jewish causes, vis-
ited Israel more frequently
and were - less inclined to
interdate or intermarry.
Moreover, the findings
disclosed that the better-
Jewishly-educated adults
evinced "a more organized,
consistent and clearly de-
fined concept of themselves
as Jews." They felt more a
part of a Jewish historical .,
tradition, were more con-
cerned with behaving ac-
cording to Jewish principles
and were better capable of
integrating their Jewish ex-
periences into their secular
lives.
