Meaning of Jewish Leap Year

The new year 5738 is sig-
nificant in that it is a leap
year. The Jewish leap year
was instituted to reconcile
the lunar and solar calcu-
lations of the calendar. This
adjustment is made by add-
ing a month — a second
Adar. A 13th month is nec-
essary because although
Jewish time is reckoned
according to the moon, the
seasons of the year are
determined by the sun, and
the Torah requires that the
festivals occur in their due
season.
A leap year occurs seven
times in every cycle of 19
years, namely in the years:
3, 6, 8, 11, 44, 17 and 19 of
the cycle. The first Adar
has 30 days, the second
Adar has 29. This inter-
calculation of years was
already practiced by the
Sanhedrin in the Hasmo-
nean and mishnaic periods.
On the spiritual signifi-
cance of leap year, the
Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menahem M. Schneerson
has remarked: .

"lhe sun and the moon
were both created lo cast
light on the earth.' How-
ever, the sun radiates its
own light, whereas the
moon has no light of its
own, but receives light from
the sun whidi it reflects to
earth.

"The sun and the moon
constitute and symbolize the
roles of `mashpia' (giver)
and `mekaber (recipient),
respectively. The sun acts
and influences, the moon is
acted upon and is
influenced, and only there-
after it also becomes a
mashpia.

"The lesson of it is that a
Jew has to be a mashpia,
and he has to be a mekabel.
He is required to diffuse
light (righteousness) to
illuminate himself and his
surroundings. But in order
to be a mashpia, he must
first be a mekabel—a recipi-
ent of the light of the Torah
and mitzvot, which then
illuminate his intellect,
emotions and all his
activities."

"Science may never

fice communications sys-
_ tern than the coffee break."
—Earl Wilson
