Rabbi Issues Kashrut Warning
on Locally-Made Ice Cream
Rabbi Jack Goldman,
kosher food consultant at
Wesley's Quaker Maid Ice
Cream Co. in Detroit,
explained some of the dif-
ferences in various ice
cream products produced
by the company.
Although the company is
under the supervision of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America,
most but not all of its prod-
ucts bear_ the OU kashrut
approval emblem. The
kosher consumer should be
aware of this and should
regard as kosher-approved
only those products that
bear the OU.
According to the laws of
the state of Michigan, sher-
bet must contain between 1
and 2 percent butter fat.
Some people are under the
impression that sherbet is
pareve, that is, that it con-
tains no milk at all.
In some states, sherbet is
actually pareve, but not in
Michigan. The carton does
not provide any information
to stress the presence of
milk in the product because
it is not required to do so.
The word "sherbet" alone
means, by law, that this is a
dairy product.
Tropicana Ices, put out by
Wesley's Quaker Maid in
three flavors, is genuinely
pareve and may be used
with meat or dairy meals.
Correction
The Festival Dancers pro-
gram sponsored by the
Temple Emanu-El Sister-
hood will take place 8 p.m.
Monday in the temple, and
not in the Jewish Commu-
nity Center as stated
incorrectly in last week's
Jewish News.
