State Marker Commemorates First Jewish Services in Detroit

By PHILLIP APPLEBAUM

Some of Detroit Jewry's
roots were brought to public
light last Sunday as about
100 people gathered on the
south lawn of the Blue
Cross-Blue Shield building
downtown to dedicate a
state historical marker
commemorating the first
Jewish religious services
held in Detroit.
The marker, commis-

sioned by the Jewish Histor-
ical Society of Michigan,
Temple Beth El and Cong.
T'chiyah (recently formed
in the Greektown area ),
stands on E. Congress, fac-

house of Isaac and Sarah
Cozens, which stood near
that corner in 1850, where a
group of German Jewish
immigrants gathered to

the Orthodox services.
Later, in September of that

the informal services
formed the "Bet El

emerged the present-day

Attorney Laurence
Deitch, who is also a mem-
ber of Cong. T'chiyah, hos-
ted the ceremonies. Rabbi
Richard C. Hertz, spiritual
leader of Temple Beth El,
gave the invocation. Milton
Glick, T'chiyah's president,
spoke of the significance of
a marker commemorating
the beginnings of Detroit
Jewry coupled with the
establishment of a new Jew-
ish congregation in the
same general area.
Carl Levin, Detroit City
Council president, gave the
main address. He described
the historical period in
which Detroit's first minyan
met, an era characterized
by the emergence of the

of a marker com-

a few feet away from
another marker honoring
the 1859 meeting of black

Doris Easton, president of
the Jewish Historical

out that the present marker

pated. Mrs. Easton
reminded the crowd that the
Historical Society will dedi-

main branch of the Jewish
Community Center, com-
memorating the first known
Jew in Detroit, Chapman
Abraham.
Marvin Novick, Beth El
president, gave a brief
address, and then he and
Glick unveiled the five-foot
high metal marker.
Also in attendance for the
dedication were Detroit
Council members Jack
Kelly and Mary Ann
Mahaffey, and an official
from the state History

Following the ceremonies,
most of those in attendance

in open house activities in
the synagogue of Cong.
