30 Friday, November 4, 1977 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS State Marker Commemorates First Jewish Services in Detroit By PHILLIP APPLEBAUM Some of Detroit Jewry's roots were brought to public light last Sunday as about 100 people gathered on the south lawn of the Blue Cross-Blue Shield building downtown to dedicate a state historical marker commemorating the first Jewish religious services held in Detroit. The marker, commis- sioned by the Jewish Histor- ical Society of Michigan, Temple Beth El and Cong. T'chiyah (recently formed in the Greektown area ), stands on E. Congress, fac- ing St. Antoine. It was in the house of Isaac and Sarah Cozens, which stood near that corner in 1850, where a group of German Jewish immigrants gathered to form the first minyan in the FOR QUICK SALE OF YOUR UNWANTED USED FURS El-Mars Suburban Shop Eleanor Heyman Morton Feuermon WE CAN SRL YOUR MINK COATS, JACKETS, STOLES, FUN FURS, PERSIANS, FUR HATS, BROADTAIL FURS, FUR TRIMMED SWEATERS, etc El-Mars Furs 13661 W. 11 Mile, just West of Coolidge Oak Park, Mich.
