THE WINERS
Over the past several
months, the Winers have
been involved in collect-
ing a history of the camp,
much of which will be pre-
sented at the anniversary
dinner.
According to Mrs.
Winer, the Fresh Air Soc-
iety is the third oldest or-
ganization in the Jewish
community. It began by
providing food for
families of new immig-
rants. The first goup of
mothers and children
picnicked on Belle Isle in
1902.
For many years women
dominated the Fresh Air
Society board of directors.
A radical change occurred
in 1929 when the society
decided that "gentlemen
should be included on the
board.” Samuel Gilbert
was the first male board
member and Harry L.
Jackson the first presi-
dent.
This unique camp facil-
ity caught the eye of
Frank Lloyd Wright in
the 1950's. "Wright was so
excited about the camp,
he drew plans for the Or-
tonville site," Mrs. Winer
said. The FAS board felt
his plans were too expen-
sive and the Wright pro-
ject had to be abandoned.
The Fresh Air Society
presently has two major
camping facilities at
Brighton and Ortonville,
totaling nearly 1,500
acres, as well as several
outpost camps in north-
ern Michigan and

Canada. Despite financial
difficulties in recent
years the society has
taken two significant
steps.
"The society takes
great pride in the camp-
ing facilities for emotion-
ally disturged and learn-
ing disabled youngsters
as well as its camping
facilities for senior citi-
zens," Mrs. Winer said.
In the last few years
services have also been ex-
tended to Jewish boys and
girls throughout the state.
Organizing the an-
niversary celebration are
Michael W. Maddin and
Donna Slatkin, co-
chairmen of the commun-
ity relations committee.
Master of ceremonies is
Leonard H. Herman.
Herman is a former
camper and counselor
and has chaired many
functions over the years:-
In recent years he co-
founded a private sum-
mer camp of his own in
