the University of Michi-
gan and teaches English
to Soviet Jewish refugees
in Detroit. He has written
a book about his experi-
ences, and will begin a
lecture tour for the Great
Lakes Region of Work-
men's Circle in December.

Detroit will present its
first district program of
the year 8:30 p.m. Satur-
day in the Workmen's
Circle Center.
The program will fea-
ture Victor Herman, au-
thor, lecturer and
teacher, who will speak
on "My 45 Years in Rus-
sia."
A member of Work-
men's Circle Branch 227,
Herman is the son of the
organizers of the local or-
ganization. In 1931, the
Herman family went to
Russia, where he became
a pilot. Herman also
fought in the Spanish
Civil War.
When he tried to return
to the U.S. in 1938, he was
arrested during a Stalin
purge and served 18 years
in prisons and labor
camps. Following his re-
lease, he earned a master's
degree and became a pro-
fessor of English in
Kishinev. .
While in the Soviet
Detroit delegates to the
United Jewish Appeal
annual conference in
Jerusalem, participating
in the Young Leadership
Mission headed by Stan-
ley Frankel, and a "This
Year in Jerusalem" dele-
gation led by Dr. Leon Fill

criminal justice 8 p.m.
Wednesday at the Oak
Park Community Center.
The program will fea-
ture a film, "Critical De-
cisions About Crime,"
produced by the Citizens
Research Council in
cooperation with the Na-
tional Bank of Detroit.
Judge Susan D. Borman
will be moderator. Topics
for discussion include
manadatory sentences
for violent crimes, plea
bargaining, and society's
responsitility for solu-
tions.
Muriel Israel is prog-
ram vice president, and
Ruth S. Rosenbaum, reg-
ional director. The public
is invited, and a coffee
hour will follow.
