cuss the "leak" about Israel
which Sen. Frank Church
(D.Idaho), committee chair-
man, has called the "biggest
goof in the way of leaks that
I can imagine, biggest that I
have ever seen in Washing-
ton."
Church, a candidate for
the Democratic nomina-
tion for President, chal-
lenged President Ford to
look into the "leak" say-
ing, "I have not even
heard of a reprimand from
the President." Bush last
week deplored but did not
deny a statement attrib-
uted to "senior" CIA offi-
cials that Israel is esti-
mated to have 10 to 20
nuclear weapons "ready
and available for use."
The CIA statement is
seen by some observers here
as part of an orchestrated
effort by Administration
elements to hold down Is-
rael's request for U.S. weap-
ons and at the same time
support the Administra-
tion's vast arms program in
process for Saudi Arabia
and outlined for Egypt.
The "leak" followed dis-
closure by the Administra-
tion of its plan to transfer
six C-130 planes to the Cairo
government as the opening
of an American military

`Accords' Still in Committee
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Senate Majority Leader
Mike Mansfield's call for a
Senate investigation into
claims by Egyptian Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat that he
has "secret agreements"
with the U.S. regarding Is-
rael is in "cold storage" in
the Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee.
Sadat claimed in a Ku-
wait news conference Feb.
29, that the discussions on
the Sinai agreement in-
cluded promises from the
U.S. that Israel would not
attack Syria and the Pales-
tinians would participate in
a Middle East settlement.
Egypt.
The CIA "leak" is also
seen as part of a general or-
chestration aimed both at
putting the Administra-
tion's foreign policy in a fa-
vorable light during the
election campaigning and
also to improve its relation-
shin with the Arab states.
(In Jerusalem, Premier
Yitzhak Rabin reiterated
at the March 14 Cabinet
meeting that Israel "is not
a nuclear power and will
not be the first state to in-
troduce nuclear weapons
into the Mideast.")
Meanwhile, Arthur Kran-
ish, the science writer who
reported the CIA leak after
hearing it at a briefing at
the CIA to which he had
been invited, said that he is
being asked to resign from

Mansfield
(D-Mont.)
noted "We were told there
were no secret agreements,"
when Secretary of State
Henry A. Kissinger ap-
peared before the commit-
tee of which Mansfield is a
member.
Following Mansfield's
call, Kissinger said all
agreements "relevant" to
the Sinai accord were dis-
closed to Congress. Commit-
tee staff personnel indicated
they received substantially
the same information in in-
quiries at the State Depart-
ment. "As of now, nothing
further will be done" a Capi-
tol source said.

Expert Claims Alcohol Use
Is Increasing Among Jews
NEW YORK (JTA) —
"Jews of all ages are drink-
ing more than ever before"
and while the true extent of
the alcoholism within the
Jewish community is yet to
be quantified, the problem
"does exist to the point
where community concern
and programs ought to be
developed on behalf of those
suffering from the disease
called alcoholism," Commis-
sioner Jerome Hornblass of
the New York City Addic-
tion Services Agency, has
declared. Commissioner
Hornblass addressed a con-
ference on alcohol abuse and
the Jewish community held
under the auspices of the
Federation of Jewish Phi-
lanthropies.
The commissioner made
the points that: alcohol and
drug abuse is virtually un-
known among Jews for
whom traditional religious
observance is the everyday
way of life or Jews with
strong commitments to
Jewish causes; that Jewish
families affected by alcohol
and drug abuse are too often
"ashamed" to seek help; and
that Jews most susceptible
to alcoholism or drug use
are in the lower and middle-
class economic brackets who
experience severe family
and social problems because
they live below or near the
poverty line.
Commissioner Hornblass
said one of the most serious
obstacles in coming to grips
with alcohol and drug abuse
among Jews was the tend-
ency of both affected fami-
i
the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronau-
tics whose members were
invited to the CIA function
attended by about 150
guests. Kranish said that he
is considering "further legal
action" against the CIA but
would not discuss his state-
ment.

If you make more than $25,000,
municipal bonds
can make more for you.
Municipal bond income is tax-free.
If your net taxable income is $25,000 or
more a year, the tax bracket you're in
could very well make municipal bonds
a much wiser investment than other
investments that, on the surface, promise
a higher yield. That's because income
from municipal bonds is free of Federal,
State* and Local taxes, while income
from higher-yield private sector invest-
ments generally is not. Therefore, the
income from these higher yield invest-
ments is often so severely diminished by
taxes that tax-free municipal bonds
may be better for you.
How we can help. Manufacturer's
Municipal Bond Department is a market
maker in most Michigan municipals and
is staffed with full-time experts who will
be glad to discuss your bond portfolio
and assist you in the purchase or sale
of municipal bonds. Right now, for ex-
ample, we are offering some school
bonds that yield 6.50%. Assuming a 40%
tax bracket, a taxable private instrument
would have to pay 10.83% to net you
6.50% on your investment.
Just call or write. If you're interested
in purchasing municipal bonds or you
simply have a question about municipal
bonds, call or write our Municipal Bond
Department, 151 W. Fort, Detroit, MI
48226, 313/222-9760. Ask us to send
you our weekly list of municipal bond
offerings. We'll be happy to.
