partment of Cultural and
Scientific Exchange of the
Foreign Ministry of Israel,
has signed cultural and
scientific agreements with
eight Central and South
American countries. Israel
has had bilateral exchange
agreements with most of
Latin America for years;
however, few of the called- -
for conditions have been
implemented.
Perceiving the inroads
that Arab propaganda and
economic pressure have

made with traditional
friends of Israel during the
past year, the Israel govern-
ment felt that the expansion
of intercultural agreements
would be a strong step for-
ward towards reversing
these trends.
With this aim in mind,
Gefen, a veteran of 25 years
of service with the Foreign
Ministry, left Israel on Jan.
18 for the first leg of his
Latin American trip.
He travelled to the Do-
minican Republic, El Sal-

vador, Honduras, Costa
Rica, Panama, Columbia
and finally Ecuador. In
each one of these countries
a cultural agreement and
exchange program was
initialed that covers the
next two-three year pe-
riod.
The document signed on
Feb. 23 with the Director-
General of the Ecuadorian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
is similar in content to those
signed with the preceding
seven nations. It is divided

Hillel Foundation
Institute Planned

A week-long Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundation institute
for Jewish college students
has been scheduled for May
26-June 1 at Camp Tamar-
ack.
The program is being
modeled after the 3-year-old
institute that each summer
brings together more than
200 student leaders of the
Hillel movement for a week
of intensive study and self-
exploration of their cultural
heritage and Jewish life-
styles. It is held during the
final week of August at the
Bmai Brith Perlman Camp
in Starlight, Pa.
The midwest program is
designed to accommodate
students whose schools now
begin the fall semester be-
fore Labor Day.
Rabbi Joel Poupko, Hil-
lel director at the University
of Michigan, will head the
new program.

Mordecai Sheftall was
chairman of the rebel com-
mittee in his native Georgia.
He supplied food and arms
for the Georgia militia.
When captured and ques-
tioned by the British, Shef-
tall refused to reveal where
American supplies Were
kept. The British called him
a "Yery . great r-ebet:"
