at age 81.
Born in Russia, Mr.

Max M. Silverman

Max M. Silverman, a
member of men's and reli-
gious organizations, died
Feb. 5 at age 67.
Born in Toronto, Mr. Sil-
verman lived 45 years in De-
troit. He was a member of
Cong. Beth Achim, and a
past president of its men's
club, a former treasurer and
trustee; a member of Per-
fection Lodge of the Masons
and the Crescent Shrine
Club. He resided at 30524
Southfield, Southfield.
Mr. Silverman leaves his
wife, Dorothy; a son, Stew-
art; two daughters, Mrs.
Martin (Jean) Hollander
and Mrs. Eleanor Schott;
his father, Echiel Silverman
of Toronto; three brothers,
Norman of Hollywood, Fla.'
Alfred of Toronto and Sid-
ney of Downsview, Ont.; a
sister, Mrs. Minnie Crozier
of Downsview; and eight
grandchildren.

Harry A. Kief

Harry A. Kief, former
owner of Kief Drugs and co-
owner of Kief Furniture
Co., died Feb. 9 at age 71.
Born in Detroit, Mr. Kief
was a graduate of Wayne
\_ State University's phar-
macy school in 1928. He
owned the drug store for 12
years and for the following
12 years was co-owner of
the furniture company. He
later went into real estate
sales and management until
H 1973.
He was a member of Mo-
saic Lodge of the Masons,
• Scottish Rite Bodies and
wa' - 32nd degree Mason.
Kief leaves his wife,
Theresa; a daughter, Sandra
Schana; a brother, Charles;
\ and a sister, Mrs. Max
(Yetta) Englander.

Ike N. Haas, one of Michi-
gan's oldest continuous resi-
dents, died Feb. 5 in Hough-
ton at age 100.
Born in Houghton Sept.
23, 1875, Haas had lived in
the Upper Peninsula com-
munity virtually all his life.
His parents moved to
Houghton in 1859. The fam-
ily owned a general store
which Haas and his brother
transformed into a clothing
store, the Ed Haas Co.
Haas was a charter mem-
ber of the Houghton Rotary
Club, a life member since
1941 of Houghton Lodge of
the Masons, a member of
the Odd Fellows and Hough-
ton's Rock House Club.
He is survived by his
daughter, Mrs. Marion Haas
of Oak Park; a sister, Mrs.
Mayme . Freedman of
Shaker Heights, Ohio; two
grandchildren, Mrs. Alice
Bodzin of Oak Park and
Robert Haas of Houghton;
and five great-grandchil-
dren.
Jack Bodzin of Oak Park
officiated at services. Inter-
ment Houghton.

Gerald Brody, 72

Gerald Brody, owner of
Brody's Knee-Hi Shoppe in
Oak Park, died Feb. 11 at
age 72..
Born in Russia, Mr. Brody
lived 35 years in Detroit. He
formerly had a store on
Dexter Ave. and moved to
the Oak Park location in
1958. He retired in 1970. He
was a member of the Jewish
Community Center and
Young Israel of Oak-Woods.
He resided at 13400 North-
field, Oak Park.
He is survived by his wife,
Fay; two sons, David and Jo-
seph; two brothers, Sam of
Miami, Fla., and Harry;
three sisters, Mrs. Albert
(Ida) Rubinstein, Mrs. Mol-
lie Conn of Hollywood, Fla.,
and Mrs. Joseph (Annette)
Horowitz; and five grand-
children. Services 1 p.m. to-
day at Hebrew Memorial
Chapel.

leaves his wife, Jean; a son,

Furrier Ben Kahn

NEW YORK - Ben
Kahn, a leading furrier and
founder of the company
which bears his name, died
Feb. 5 at age 89.

Born in Russia, Mr. Kahn
began as a cutter in New
York's fur district in 1907
and later started his own
company which came to
bear one of America's most-
desired labels. Movie stars
and other notables were
known to patronize Mr.
Kahn's salons.
