kinds of appetizers, called
smorgasbord. On it are
found many kinds of bread

meat, cold game, herring,
grilled kindeys, egg dishes,
(getting hungry?) cucum-

anchovies.
THE EUROPEAN part
of the Soviet Union has the
traditional Russian foods
which include a large num-
ber of cold dishes, such as
smoked fish, game and sal-
ads. The Russian name for
these dishes is zakuska. The
best known Russian dishes
in the States are caviar,
salted herring, cucumbers
and pickled beets, (pass the
borsht). Black bread (rye)
and cabbage soup are eaten
almost everywhere. Sme-
tana, or sour cream, is
widely used, especially in
soups.

visited Germany have found
that the Germans like heavy
foods, especially those with

Likud Generals
Uneasy in Party?

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Dr.
Elimelech Rimalt, former
chairman of the Liberal
party, said in a Ma'ariv in-
terview that "Generals
'Arik' Sharon and Ezer
Weizmann have not yet
demonstrated they are at
home in the Likud." Accord-
ing to Rimalt, both Sharon
and Weizmann achieved
brilliant careers in the army
but they simply lack the
necessary political experi-
ence.

a sweet-sour taste. Sau-
sages, pickled and smoked
meats, dumplings, soups
that are thick, whipped
cream, (I'm bursting al-
ready) and cakes, are popu-
lar German foods. Sauer-
kraut, a general favorite, is
used in many ways, espe-
cially with beef, veal, pork
and apples.
WHILE WE HAVE high-
lighted a few coutnries, vir-
tually all kinds of food can
be found in our country . . .
but there, are some foods
and some ways of eating
that are typically American.
During the summer many
of us go off to the country
for picnics or eat at roadside
stands. The sandwich is not
an American -invention, but
it has become an American
standby. The Coney Island
and the hamburger are
American favorites. Ice
cream and cake, cider and
doughnuts, apple and
pumpkin pie are our famous
desserts . . . and as we have
said . , that what the rich-
est king would have paid a
ransom for just a few
hundred years ago, is ours
within a few blocks or miles
from our homes . . for just
a few dollars.
