Burns in 'Sunshine Boys?
BY HERBERT G. LUFT
(Copyright 1976, JTA,
Inc.)
George Burns was pres-
ent at Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer Studios after a
screening of "The Sunshine
Boys" in which he portrayed
Al Lewis, straight man to
Walter Matthau's Willy
Clark. Burns took the part,
created by Sam Levine on
Broadway, after Jack
Benny, his life-long friend
had-passed on suddenly.
Benny originally was
signed for the much coveted
role and Burns found it ap-
propriate to make his mo-
tion picture comeback as a
tribute to the memory of the
great comedian. The team of
Matthau and Burns, por-
traying Smith and Dale of
yesteryear, is something to
view and enjoy; a slice of
New York and of humanity
at large.
The comedian, born Na-
than Birnbaum, broke into
vaudeville 60 years ago and
formed the team of Burns
and Allen (with his late wife
Gracie) half a century ago.
He humorously told us that
he had not made a picture
since "Honolulu" 36 years
ago, because no one asked
him. In fact, he plays now
for the very first time a
2haracter instead of him-
self.
George Burns summa-
rized that he had the quali-
fication for the part be-
caus9 his home town is
New York, he was a vau-
devillian, is Jewish, and —
old.
Robert L. Joseph sur-
prised everyone in Holly-
wood with his gossamer
story and screenplay to
"Echoes of a Summer" and
his skillful mounting as the
producer of the Richard
Harris starrer filmed on lo-
cation in Nova Scotia, Can-
ada. The film deals with the
last year on earth of a
12-year-old girl who is
doomed to die of a heart
disease.
Jodie- Foster, as the
youngster who withers
away with great dignity,
Harris, as the father who
takes his child into the
world of fable and dreams,
and Lois Nettleton as the
anguished mother who is
not willing to give up and
fights death at every step,
render performancs all
worth an Academy Award.

ALBANY (JTA) — Gov.
Hugh L. Carey proclaimed
last Tuesday as the 236th
anniversary of the birth of
Haym Salomon. The anni-
versary proclamation
stated:
"As we celebrate the Bi-
centennial of our nation's
founding, it is appropriate
that we pay particular hom-
age to those courageous in ,-
dividuals who played promi-
nent roles in the American
Revolution."
Salomon, who was born in
Poland, came to America in
1772 and with the outbreak
of the American Revolution
became an ardent supporter
of the Colonial cause, the
proclamation noted..

Old Copper Mine
TEL AVIV — In Israel a
team of specialists from the
Bochum mining museum
are excavating a 1,000-year-
old copper mine in the Tim-
natal. They hope their ef-
forts will inform them
about ancient mining meth-
ods.
The project was made
possible by a grant from the

UNICEF Card
Sales Decrease
NEW YORK — Loss of
faith in the United Nations
has been attributed as a
cause of a two million card
sales drop of the United
Nations Children's Fund
greeting cards sold during
the winter holiday season.
A UNICEF spokesman
said that the organization
sold 28 million cards, com-
pared with $30 million in
1974 and 32 million in 1973.
The spokesman said some
groups and individuals de-
cided not to send the cards
because "it would embar-
rass them" in the wake of
the General Assembly vote
equating Zionism with rac-
ism.
