Delightful 'Growing Up at Grossinger's,' Worthwhile for Leisure Reading

How many know the true
story behind Eddie Fisher's
"discovery" by Eddie Can-
tor?
Anyone can find out
about how this show busi-
ness personality got his
start with a plus — what
the "borscht belt" hotel,
business is really all about
— in Tania Grossinger's
entertaining "Growing Up
at Grossinger's."
Published by David Mc-
Kay. Co., Miss Grossinger's
book is mainly autobio-
graphical, even while giving
the inside scoop on how the
famous Grossinger's resort
really operated.

to Historical Sites

Miss Grossinger, cousin
of the late hotel matriarch
Jennie Groosinger, details
her life at the hotel, mis-
chief the hotel children
involved themselves in and
statistics about the hotel's
operation.

Although the book is
filled with lively and humor-
ous stories about guests, ce-
lebrities and hotel staff, it
carries with it a note of
sadness.
The author states that
despite the mischief and fun
in which she and the other
children of hotel staff par-
ticipated, her life was still
unsettled. A ruined mar-
riage to a Detroiter was
proof of her lack of what

WASHINGTON — Bnai Gerontology Studies

Brith's Community Volun-

help locate Jewish historical
sites in the United States.
Written by James Mer-

resource suggestions and
other ideas that can be ap-
plied in a search for histori-

Among the suggestions
are where to seek out infor-
mation about a communi-
ty's Jewish history, what to
look for, and what should be
done when a site is uncov--
ered.
Community Volunteer
Services is offering the
booklet as part of a package
that also includes the Amer-

DALLAS — The first
Gerontology Training Insti-
tute under Jewish auspices
has been establshed by the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations in coopera-
tion with the University of
Georgia in Athens to pre-
pare a growing 50-years and
older Reform congrega-
tional membership for re-
tirement, new voluntary
and professional assign-
ments and the useful occu-
pation of leisure time.
In outlining the new insti-
tute at the 53rd Biennial As-
sembly here, Bernard E.
Linden of Oak Park, chair-
man of a UAHC gerontology
committee, noted that the
new project would also edu-
cate and train congrega-
tional leaders to "under-
stand the problems of the
retirement or pre-retire-
ment group and then train
them to develop meaningful
activities for them in their
congregations and commu-
nity."

Clandestinely, the public

Miss Grossinger relates:
"As usual, Eddie Fisher

Haifa U. Creates
Chair in Zionism

HAIFA — The Dr. Reu-
ben Hecht Chair in Zionism
was recently inaugurated at
the University of Haifa.
Holder of the chair is Prof.
J. Nedava.
The first aim of the chair
is to foster a group of re-
searchers to concentrate on
all aspects of research in
Zionism. In order to insure
regular and continuous re-
search activities in the sub-
ject, archivist material must
be provided at the univer-
sity.
Prof. Nedava is seeking
manuscripts, documents
and Jewish newspapers of
the relevant period — the
period of the British regime
and British Mandate in Pa-
lestine (1917-1948).
Back copies of "New Pa-
lestine" and other journals
also are sought.
Persons wishing to donate
materials may send them to
the office of the American
Friends of Haifa University,
500 Fifth Avenue, New York
City, N.Y. 10036.

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
Committees of volunteers
are bringing the Jewish
Sabbath to shut-ins in Bay
Area convalescent hospitals
as a new step in Project
Concern, a community serv-
ice of the Western Area
Council of the Jewish Feder-
ation-Council of Los An-
geles and the Jewish Family
Service of Santa Monica.
The project will bring the
Sabbath to the Jewish aged
and ill in the form of "mini-
services," partly in script
form and partly on tape,
consisting both of religious
services and readings from
the poems and stories of
Jewish writers.
Officials said the goal of
the project is to bring cul-
tural, social, religious and
recreational services to such
Jews in all Bay Cities Jew-
ish communities.

singer audience, by their ap-

agreed with Cantor's assess-

Fisher to join him on a
coast-to-coast tour he was
about to make. Fisher came
back on stage, sang two
songs, and the audience
went wild. Pandemonium

set in. And thus a star was

Tania

"Growing Up at Grossin-

evening's leisure reading.

Oilfield Workers
Get Compensation

Open a 1976
Christmas or
Hanukkah
Club now at
National Bank
of Southfield.

TEL AVIV (ZINS) —
Technicians and other per-
sonnel employed at the Abu
Rodeis oil fields, which are
now being turned over to
Egypt, are to receive com-
pensation in the aggregate
of approximately $11.5 mil-
lion.

Set aside a little money every week and you'll never
miss it. Come next November, though, you'll have
cash on hand for holiday giving. Plus interest* to
make you feel even jollier.
It's really very simple. You sign up for a Christmas or
Hanukkah Club at any branch of National Bank of
Southfield. You choose the weekly deposit schedule
to fit your income: Si, $2, $3, $5, 510 or 520. When
the year's up, you get all your money back, plus
interest. You can even open a Club for someone else
and give the cash as a gift next November.
Open your NBS Christmas or Hanukkah Club now ...
then have a happy holiday 1976!

This is said to be the larg-
est compensatory payment
made to any working group
in the entire history of Is-
rael. It is alleged that this
extraordinarily costly ar-
rangement was arrived at in
a secret understanding be-
tween the Histadrut and the
government-owned Netevei
Neft which was responsible
for the management of the
oilfields.
