Dr. Max Arzt, Longtime Seminarian
NEW YORK — Dr. Max
Arzt, vice chancellor of the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America, died Sun-
day at age 78.
In addition to his vice
chancellorship, Dr. Arzt
was Israel Goldstein Profes-
sor of Practical Theology
and in that capacity had
taught hundreds of rabbis
now serving congregations
here and abroad.

London in 1959 and a
charter member of the advi-
sory council of the Interna-

"Justice and Mercy: A Com-
mentary on the liturgy of
the New Year and the Day
of Atonement" and a con-
tributing editor of the mag-
azine Judaism. He also was
chairman of the Joint
Prayer Book Commission of
the United Synagogue of
America and the Rabbinical
Assembly.
