THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Dr. Max Arzt, Longtime Seminarian NEW YORK — Dr. Max Arzt, vice chancellor of the Jewish Theological Semi- nary of America, died Sun- day at age 78. In addition to his vice chancellorship, Dr. Arzt was Israel Goldstein Profes- sor of Practical Theology and in that capacity had taught hundreds of rabbis now serving congregations here and abroad. 17)- Arzt had a leadership n the Young Judaea 610iiist Youth movement. a new English translation of the Bible. Dr. Arzt spoke in Detroit on numerous occasions, primarily at installations of rabbis coming to local con- gregations and at dedica- tions of new synagogue structures. He was a member of the committee that is preparing DR. He was the author of "Justice and Mercy: A Com- mentary on the liturgy of the New Year and the Day of Atonement" and a con- tributing editor of the mag- azine Judaism. He also was chairman of the Joint Prayer Book Commission of the United Synagogue of America and the Rabbinical Assembly.
