Are Defined

-

The term "Misnagdim"
means "opponents." It was
applied to those who op-
posed the Hasidic move-
ment in •the early 19th Cen-
tury.

They were especially
prominent in Lithuania and
White Russia. Most famous
among these opponents was
the famous Gaon of Vilna,
Rabbi Elijah.
The opposition was stim-
ulated by a fear that the

movement would weaken
the intellectual facet of Ju-
daism and might lead to
superstitions which were
unfounded.
Even though that part of
the Jewish population
which does not follow Has-
idic tendencies are no longer
"opponents" in the strict
sense of the word, the term
is still used as a distinguish-
ing feature, making a dis-
tinction between Hasidim
and other Jews.

He noted that with the
search of young people for
importance in their lives,
"aliya can be the fulfill-
ment of a challenge for
every young Jew." As for
"those who are not so
young," Tekoah said that
"aliya is the culmination
of all our hopes, our
dreams, our plans since
youth."

He said the rewards of liv-
