History of Fast of Tammuz
By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1975, JTA, Inc.)
Historical significance is
the reason for the Fast of
the 17th day of Tammuz.
In the course of the de-
struction of the First Tem-
ple in Jerusalem, the wall
was breached on the ninth
day of Tammuz..(Jeremiah
52.6). When the destruction
of the Second Temple_ took
place the wall was then
breached on the 17th day of.
Tammuz.
Not wanting to make two
days of mourning and fast-
ing in the same month, the
rabbis set aside the 17th day
of Tammuz as the day of
mourning and fasting for
the breach . of the'wall in the
case of the destruction of
both temples. Even though
this was the major reason
for the Fast of Tammuz,
other regrettable incidents
occurred on this same day.
Moses broke the first set
of tablets on this day when
he descended the mountain
of Sinai. and found the He-
brews worshipping the
Golden Calf. Further-more,
it was on this day when the
Greco-Syrians besieged the
wall of Jerusalem that the
daily sacrifices stopped in
the temple since the He-
brews could no longer pro-
cure the lambs due to the
siege which cut off their
supply.
A Roman leader in a
later period burned a To-
rah scroll publicly later on
in history on this same
day. The burning of a To-
rah was regarded as a
great calamity for the peo-
ple of Israel.

Either in the days of the
Maccabean crisis or later
during the Roman period it
is maintained that an idol
was placed in the temple of
Jerusalem on this day thus
bringing defilement to this

Treatment of Jews
As Minority Urged
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
ITS. Congress was asked to
include Jews as a minority
whose rights are to be pro-
tected, in a statement sent
to all members of Congress
by Dr. Bernard Frvshinan,
chairman of the Commis-
sion On Legislation and Civic
Action of Agudath Israel of
A in erica..
brew month of Tammuz all
these tragic events are
brought to mind. These
events are still remembered
in current times because the
tragedies caused by these
events have never been recti-
fied yet. There still is no
temple in Jerusalem. There
still is no daily sacrifice.
The spirit of rebellion and
defilement is still evident in
many Jewish communities.
Therefore, the damage of
yesterday has never been re-
paired.
Jews remember those
facts because they still live
with h.Qpe that there will
some day be the restitution`
and re-establishment of the
temple of old with its sacrif-
ices, its state of purity and
its spirit of dedication and
commitment which will be
evident in Jewish communi-
ties all over the
world.
for its failure to make an
"effective contribution to-
ward the resacralization of
Jewish life by providing an
example of ethical sensitiv-
ity and confronting coura-
geously the grave social and
moral issues besetting so-
ciety." He decried "this em-
barrassing silence" and
added that "halakhic Juda-
ism cannot thrive in the nar-
row confines of a religious
ghetto isolated from the
mainstream of society."
Rabbi Rackman, in his
remarks, urged Conserva-
tive and Reform rabbis not
to strike up an alliance with
secular bodies in Israel. He
referred specifically to Jus-
tice Haim Cohn of Israel's
Supreme Court who, he
charged, was conducting a
campaign against Jewish
religious law and was trying
to influence Conservative
and Reform rabbis -in this
country.
Justice Cohn recently
suggested that Reform and
conservative rabbis could
successfully challenge the
domination of the Ortho-
dox religious authoritie,
in Israel in Israel's courts
Rabbi Rackman said "th
total secularization of th,t
Jewish state would be tragir
for Israel and world Jewry
and neither Conservativ ,
nor Reform Judaism- "cat
profit from Israel's secular;
zation."

A STATEMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
FROM THE ADAT SHALOM SYNAGOGUE
The unprecedented action taken recently by the Board of Trus-
tees of Adat Shalom Synagogue in obtaining the protection of the
Federal Courts while it continues its program to cure the existing
fiscal crisis, was necessitated by the refusal of one creditor to agree
to our program of paying all creditors in full with no discounts or
settlements of any nature whatsoever being asked of them. This
will continue to be our position.
This Synagogue is determined to carry on as one of the outstand-
ing Conservative Congregations on the American scene today. The
problems caused by the need to relocate are not uncommon to con-
gregations. We are not alone in these circumstances. In its brief
history as a Conservative Congregation, Adat Shalom has produced
16 rabbis as well as cantors and educators. Its aid to the State of
Israel is already legend as the forerunner in the United States of
the sale of Israel Bonds.
We have proudly served this community and shall continue to do
so in the future. We ask only that the community recognize that
the dream of Israel has been nurtured in the Synagogue for thou-
sands of years and that the loss of a single synagogue is a loss to
all of our people and the State of Israel.
We are here to stay and our membership walks proudly in full
support of their Synagogue. We invite all families to join with us.
