Chicago Federation Dialogues
Stimulate `Inactive Jews'

New Absorption
Centers Planned

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Two new absorption centers
will be opened shortly for
immigrants without college
training.
The first will be at
Ofakim, east of Beersheba
or in Dimona, west of that
city. Both have industrial
plants that could provide
jobs for large numbers of
immigrants.
Up to now only college-
trained immigrants were
allowed to remain at ab-
sorption centers for as long
as several months while
looking for employment and
deciding where to settle in
Israel.
Other immigrants are
taken directly from Ben-
Gurion Airport to new de-
velopment areas. This prac-
tice has been criticized.
The two new centers will
allow the immigrants time
to decide where to live while
the Absorption Ministry
helps them find jobs and
permanent housing.

The program provides in-

Rabin Says Military Security
Requires Sound Economy

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pre-
mier Yitzhak Rabin told Is-
raeli industrialists that a
militarily secure Israel
would make little sense
without a sound economic
structure and a strong so-
ciety at home.
Addressing the closing
session of the Manufactur-
ers Association's annual
meeting here, Rabin
stressed that the economic
future of Israel lies solely in
Israel's hands and if there is
any criticism "it must be
aimed =at atirselves." - -

If countries hosting Is-

Russian, Viet
Refugees Aided

NEW YORK — United
HIAS Service reported that
it has now resettled 200
Vietnamese refugees and
registered 1,000 others, and
that immigration of Rus-
sian Jews to the U.S.
reached 1,796 in April and
May, the highest two-month
figures in HIAS' history of
resettling Russian Jews.
HIAS has now resettled
9,000 Russian Jews in the
U.S. since 1968, and expects
to resettle 10,000 Viet-
namese and 150 Cambodi-
ans.

UJA Cash Drive

Nets $30 Million

NEW YORK (ZINS) —
The United Jewish Appeal
launched a special cash col-
lection campaign several
weeks ago to raise $100 mil-
lion.
According- to the Hebrew
daily "Ha'aretz", the effort
has so far netted only $30
million, and it appears that
it will be increasingly diffi-
cult to obtain new commit-
ments.
Meanwhile, sources re-
port that cash collections
are ahead of what they were
last year at this time. The
campaign .leadership re-
gards this year's effort as
most successful.
It is also reported that as
of the first quarter of this
year, the sale of Israel
Bonds was off between $12-
$15 million, as compared
with the same period last
