reaffirming his position of
support for Israel.
Michigan members of the
U.S. House of Representa-
tives who met with the
state's Jewish delegation
also gave their encourage-
ment to the defenders of Is-
rael's position.
Senator Hart issued the
following statement:

"Israel and the United
States have a mutuality of
concern based on a com-
mon philosophy of democ-
racy and freedom. It is
because of this relation-
ship that we stand to-
gether as partners striving
together for human dign-
ity.

"Israel is a sovereign state
which is entitled to security
and the right to exist in
peace. At this crucial period
in Israel's history, I wish to
reaffirm my strong support
for the survival, security
and economic well being of
Israel, a firm ally of the
United States.
"Further, I believe Israel
and the Arab states ought to
observe the spirit of UN Se-
curity Council Resolutions
242 and 338 and begin direct
negotiations working to-
ward secure borders and
equal recognition.
"In reaffirming the ident-
ity of interests between the
United States and Israel, I
urge our government to con-
tinue to maintain the mili-
tary balance of power in the-
Middle East by providing
Israel the arms she needs to
defend herself. Such a pol-
icy will serve the cause of
world peace, for in a real
sense, the avoidance of a
Great Power confrontation
depends on the preservation
of the ceasefire in the Mid-
dle East."

The Michigan delega-
tion included Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Panush of the Zion-
ist Organization of De-
troit, Rabbi Leon Fram of
Temple Israeli delegations
from Flint and Traverse
City, and Mrs. Ann Bar-
nett of Birmingham and
Mr. and Mrs. Felix Rosen-
zweig. They met with
