Michigan members of the U.S. House of Representa- tives who met with the state's Jewish delegation also gave their encourage- ment to the defenders of Is- rael's position. Senator Hart issued the following statement: "Israel and the United States have a mutuality of concern based on a com- mon philosophy of democ- racy and freedom. It is because of this relation- ship that we stand to- gether as partners striving together for human dign- ity. "Israel is a sovereign state which is entitled to security and the right to exist in peace. At this crucial period in Israel's history, I wish to reaffirm my strong support for the survival, security and economic well being of Israel, a firm ally of the United States. "Further, I believe Israel and the Arab states ought to observe the spirit of UN Se- curity Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and begin direct negotiations working to- ward secure borders and equal recognition. "In reaffirming the ident- ity of interests between the United States and Israel, I urge our government to con- tinue to maintain the mili- tary balance of power in the- Middle East by providing Israel the arms she needs to defend herself. Such a pol- icy will serve the cause of world peace, for in a real sense, the avoidance of a Great Power confrontation depends on the preservation of the ceasefire in the Mid- dle East."
