Mother Decries Cost of Holding
Synagogue Bar Mitzva Rites
E-litor, The Jewish News:
would like to comment
on a problem I feel confronts
many families who try to
make arrangements for Bar
itzvas. We are not mem-
bers of any synagogue, main-
ly because of cost.
We are Conservative, more
So than Orthodox or Reform.
My son has gone to United
Hebrew Schools for as many
:c7ears as required. I am
ready to make plans for a
simple Bar Mitzva, but one
he will always remember
with pride.
I call synagogue after
synagogue — Answer:
1. If not a member—sorry.
2. Does not go to Hebrew
school here—sorry.
3. Prices range from $300
to $450 just for services and
kidush.
Question: Why do the syna-
gogues make their membe•-
ships so high that people
L'an't afford to be members?
Why $450 for services when
the rabbi is there anyway
and the synagogue is open on
Saturday for regular serv-
ices? Does a kidush cost $300
to $450, for the few guests
invited?
We build these great big
beautiful synagogues that
only a few can afford to be a
part of. We talk about little
participation by youngsters
and adults and youth convert-
ing or leaving the syna-
gogues — have we not priced
our religion out of the reach
of many? To have a boy Bar
Mitzvaed is an honor for all
Jews alike. Are there boys
not Bar Mitzvaed because of
the expense?
If I can not afford a large
party afterward for my son
— then this I must do on my
own level. But the services
themselves should be priced
where anyone can afford to
do so with pride. If the child
has gone to Hebrew school
all those years to study for
his Bar Mitzva, it should be
an honor in itself. Why
should any family feel that
their son is a second-class
member of the Jewish faith
because they can't afford
services at a decent place?
We have not only priced
synagogues for only the
elite, but we have turned a
once happy occasion into a
nightmare for some families.
A Bar Mitzva should be a
must for all boys, but we
shouldn't have to continue
paying for it until their
weddings.
My, son will have a Bar
Mitzva because I am bound
and determined to do so, but
it will be with no thanks to
any of the synagogues in the
Detroit area who are more
interested in their buildings
than in a boy.

Simimit on Israel Suggested

Editor, The Jewish News:
It is time for a world Jew-
ish summit on Israel.
Our preoccupied concern
with the day-to-day news
• coming out of Israel is apt
to blind us to what is taking
shape behind these dis-
/- patches. I am looking past
\ any disengagement on the
/- S'yrian front to the Geneva
conference where Israel's
borders may be frozen for
enerations to come, and the
rTheculiar quality of the Jew-
ish state diluted to an unac-
cepted degree.
The driving force behind
the Zionist movement was
the need of the Jewish Peo-
ple for a place where it can
live as of right, not on suf-
ierance.
It is this that is being
threatened, and events, if
they are permitted by the

/ sands of our finest people,
not to speak of vast treasures
expended.
What the Arabs and their
cynical allies are attempting
is the piecemeal dismember-
ment of the Jewish state. Is-
rael has become the arena
/--where the world is testing
the strength and the will of
the entire Jewish People.
There can be no retreat from
just and fundamental posi-
tions which will assure Is-
'9 rael permanent, adequate,
secure and defensible boun-
daries.
During all this, a pall of
silence has descended on
-g
Jewish organizations and,
especially, on Israel's In-
formation Service. The lat-
ter's low - key "dignified”
stance akainst 25 years of
unremitting Arab propaganda
has given a semblance of
reality to Arab pipe dreams,
and of truth to outright fab-
rications.
Thus, today, we need a
world-wide gathering of Jew-
ish representatives to make
clear in the most dramatic
and forceful manner possible
the depth of Jewish feeling
with regard to Israel, and the
unswerving determination to
support, without reservation,
its need for secure boun-
daries; that this support will
continue under any condi-
tion and over any period of
time.
Such a convocation would
present a unity similar to
that historic meeting in 1929
when the Jewish Agency was
formed. Such an assemblage
of leaders of world Jewry
would cut across all lines and
would command overwhelm-
ing coverage from all media.
This world conference
would be a crushing reply to
outrageous Arab claim s,
charges and pretensions, and
a most welcome antidote to
the steady procession of past
Arab "summits." I believe
it would be politically wise
and potent, and would be a
tremendous shot in the arm
for Israeli morale.

Editor, The Jewish News:
Since we graduated from
Berkley High School in Jan-
uary, we have been working
with the preschool children
of several striking migrant
families. These farmworker
families have come from
California to the Detroit area
on the boycott of head let-
tuce, grapes and Gallo wines.
The commitment and dedi-
cation of these people to a
nonviolent struggle to end in-
justice in the fields deeply
impresses both of us. Their
union is much more than a
union — it is a movement to
change the roots of dis-
