Shavuot, the Feast of
Weeks, will be celebrated in
area synagogues Sunday
through Tuesday. The holi-
day, which occurs seven
weeks after Passover, also
commemorates the giving of
the Torah to Moses at Mt.
Sinai, and marks the wheat
harvest. (Check synagogues
not listed for service sched-
ules.)
Cong. Shaarey Zedek will
begin its Shavuot schedule
with services 6 p.m. Sunday.
At 8:45 a.m. Monday, Rabbi
Howard Lifshitz will speak
on "The Mountain." Evening
services will be held at 6.
At 8:45 a.m. Tuesday Rabbi
Irwin Groner will speak on
"The Everlasting Promise."
Yizkor service will follow.
Young Israel of Oak-Woods
will hold Shavuot services
8:45 p.m. Sunday. Rabbi
James I. Gordon will speak
on "Hagba and Gelila." The
synagogue will open at 11
p.m. for the traditional all-
night study session, Tikun
Layl Shavuot. Services will

will begin Shavuot services
8:40 p.m. Sunday when
Rabbi Joshua Sperka will

tween God and Man." He will
deliver a D'var Torah be-

services. The synagogue will
have an all-night study ses-
sion taught by Rabbis Abra-
ham Zentman and Chaim

Honoree
Mrs. Morris (Goldie) Adler
has been designated to re-
ceive the Solomon Schechter
Medal from her alma mater,
the Jewish Theological Sem-
inary of America, at a pri-
vate reception 3:30 p.m.,
June 20 in the Standard City
Club. The Solomon Schechter
Medal is awarded to persons
whose efforts in behalf of the
seminary stand in the tradi-
tion of the scholar, thinker,
rabbi and leader who served
from 1902 to 1915 as the sem-
inary's second president.
Mrs. Adler, a graduate of the
seminary's Teachers Insti-
tute, is the first member of
a rabbinical family to be ac-
corded the honor. Since com-
ing to Detroit with her late
husband 35 years ago, she
has been active in Shaarey
Zedek Congregation and Ha-
dassah, and has lectured
widely.
