Dulzin Announces Candidacy
for WZO, Agency Chairman

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Leon
Dulzin announced officially
that he was a candidate for
the chairmanship of the Jew-
ish .Agency and the World
Zionist Organization Execu-
tives.
A new chairman will be
elected in secret balloting by
the 296 members of the Jew-
ish Agency general assembly
which convenes in Jerusalem
in June.
Dulzin, who has been serv-
.ig as acting chairman since
the death of Louis Pincus
last year, is considered al-
most certain to win the elec-
tion.
His only potentially serious
rival is Hebrew University
President Avraham Harman

who is said to have the
backing of the Labor Party
leadership, including Premier
Golda Meir. But his name has
not been officially entered as
yet, and some sources be-
lieve the Labor Party may
not press his candidacy since
it controls only 17 per cent
of the votes in the general
assembly.
Dulzin is acknowledged by
most Jewish Agency mem-
bers to be the most qualified
person for the dual post. His
only drawback, from the
viewpoint of the Labor Party,
is that he is a leader in the
opposition Likud Party, Dul-
zin declared: "Whoever
thinks that in this case politi-
cal coercion is possible, is
mistaken."

trial on several criminal
charges, made his announce-
ment at a press conference
during which he castigated
Israel's leadership and the
Jewish leadership abroad as
"bankrupt" and "cowardly."
He said the JDL in its
present form could not suc-
ceed because its ideas "are
too big, too genuine, too Jew-
ish and too daring for the
narrow-minded and the cow-
ards." He claimed, however,
that the JDL philosophy was
"the only hope for the Jew-
ish nation in this chaotic
hour."

sources, Kahane believes that

the JDL which he founded
in the mid-'60s to defend
poor Jews in deteriorating
New York City neighbor-
hoods, was presently laden
with many "provocateurs"
allegedly planted by various
opposing bodies who were
hampering its activities.
Without Kahane, the JDL has
no future, the sources said.
Kahane's future is also
clouded. He has been indict-
ed by Israeli courts on
charges of arms smuggling,
inciting against the Arab
population and acts to dis-
rupt friendly relations be-
tween Israel and the U. S.

Kahane Quits as JDL Head

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Rabbi
Meir Kahane, founder of the
Jewish Defense League, an-
nounced here Tuesday that
he was resigning as its chair-
man.
He said he was quitting
because there was "too little
of the right people, too little
talent and too little money"
to carry out the JDL pro-
gram. He said he would con-
tinue to advance the JDL
ideology through the "center
of Jewish consciousness"
which he has set up in Jeru-
salem.
