Responds to Yoni Kippur War
i
A 10-minute discussion on
the necessity of world Jewry
supporting Israel in her hour
of need sparked the social
consciousness of a group of
12 retarded adults, resulting
in the collection of $108.64
for the Israel Emergency
Fund.
As a result of a grant from
the Jewish Community Foun-
dation, this group of shelter-
ed workshop clients from the
Jewish Vocational Service
and Community Workshop
are participating in an ac-
culturation program geared
toward enriching their life
experiences.

An awareness of Israel's
struggle for existence through
history has been studied
through use of literature and
map illustrations. Other sub-
jects include Jewish holidays
and traditions. The group re-
cently toured Cong. Shaarey
Zedek and visited the sukka.
Communication skills are
emphasized at each meeting,
and their is a newspaper
written by the members.
The "Social Club" has par-
ticipated in several field
trips, such as to the Detroit
Historical Museum, to the
Detroit Institute of Arts and
to Wayne State University
for lunch. A trip to Canada
is now being planned as part
of the study of Michigan and
its neighbors.
The acculturation program
is led by Denise Goldman, a
senior at Wayne State Uni-
versity majoring in special
education of the mentally re-
tarded. She is also a teacher
at Bnai Moshe Religious
School.

It was like a commencement when 37 women graduated
from the 1973 women's division leadership seminar, a six-
session course which gives an inside perspective on the
work of the Jewish Welfare Federation and its benefici-
aries in the areas of community relations, education, health
and welfare. The course included an introductory meeting
at the sponsoring Jewish Welfare Federation, an extensive
tour of the Jewish Vocational Service-Community Work-
shop, agencies visits at Jewish Family and Children's
Service and Federation Apartments and the last session,
at the home of Mrs. Saul M. Shapiro, which focused on
overseas agencies and up-to-date news on Israel, at which
this photo was taken. Leadership graduates photographed
are Mesdames Stanley Aaron, Jerome Acker, Myron Bake,
Fred Benderoff, Eli Berger, Sidney Brickner, Philip N.

The Arabs now have a very
formidable military leader —
General Oil. It is said the
United Nations is now con-
sidering naming itself after
him, "Oil the Nations" in-
stead of United Nations.

This isn't the first time Is-
rael was troubled by oil:
More than 2,000 years ago, a
Syrian leader sought to de-
stroy Israel. He proposed to
wipe out the Israeli soldiers
and sell the remaining Is-
raelites into slavery and he
even invited the slave dealers
to come prepared- to make
their purchases. The name of
this benevolent minded fel-
low was Antiochus, but Judas
Maccabeus soon had him
running backwards. When the
Judaean leader entered the
Temple, it looked like An-
tiochus had really triumphed,
for there was only enough oil
to last for one day, but a
miracle happened and the oil
lasted for eight days. That is
why we celebrate the Hanuka
festival for eight days.

MON.-THURS.-FRI. 9-8. OTHER DAYS 9-6
gation in liberal Greenwich
Village has finally collapsed.
The two congregations used
the same building, the Jews
on Saturday, the Presbyteri-
ans on Sunday. The the old
Presbyterian minister died
and a new minister replaced
him with new ideas. First, he
initiated some nudity pro-
grams in the basement of his
church. The Jews seemed to
feel that the problems of the
world needed more redress-
ing than undressing. Then
there was another problem.
The Jewish congregation on
the bulletin board in front of
the church posted a sign ex-
pressing hopes of victory for
Israel and peace for the Mid-
dle East. The Presbyterian
minister liked the Arabs. So
the experiment has ended.
Perhaps it could never be ex-
pected to succeed. The simple
fact is that while some Jews
may give Christmas presents,
very few Presbyterians will
consent to fast on Yom Kip-
pur.
