7eturn, to Yiddishkeit' Marked in Lubavitcher Wedding Here

By CHARLOTTE DUBIN

In search of roots, Judith
olnez returned to the Old
)untry practices of her
•andparents. Several hun-
ed miles away, David
Izerson - a veteran of all
e college fads from pot
peace and politics - had
returning of his own.
Two weeks ago, Judith -
Gitel - and David -
ovid - were married in one
the rare Lubavitcher Ha-
dic weddings in Detroit.

Gitel is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Wolnez
of London Ct., Southfield.
Her husband is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lazer-
son of Buffalo.
Rabbi David Lieberman,
principal of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, officiated at the
traditional outdoor wedding,
attended by close to 250 per-
sons. Before returning to
Morristown, N. J., where the
bridegroom attends Tifereth
Bachurim yeshiva, the couple
was honored at a series of
dinner parties, "sheva bra-
hot."
("Sheva brahot" - seven
blessings - refers to the
brahot recited each night of
the week following the mar-
riage. The parties are hosted
and attended by relatives
and friends of the couple.)

The rejoicing of the local
Lubavitch community was
compounded by the fact that
the couple seek to become
"baalei teshuva," a term re-
ferring to Jews who return
to Yiddishkeit. Since neither
is from a Torah-observant
family, their turn to Luba-
vitch Hasidism is regarded
as a special mitzva.

He was encouraged to com-
plete his university studies
before enrolling last year in
the Morristown yeshiva. He
and Gitel met on a "blind
date," arranged by friends,
Gitel always had a passing in New York.

Dovid doesn't find it un-
usual that the spark of
Yiddishkeit was lit during
his final year of college. For
both him and Gitel it came
at a time of disillusionment.
In Dovid's case, it was at
the end of a series of dis-
appointing experiences with
alternative life styles.
And he is not alone. "At
my yeshiva one year ago,
there were 18 guys - all be-
ginners like me. Today there
are 50 or 60." The summer
before Gitel attended Chabad
classes in Minneapolis, there
were 30 girls. A year later
there were 100.
"It's happening all across
the country," Dovid insists.
"This generation is search-
ing; Jewish kids are looking
for where they belong, for
roots. Some turn to Hare
Krishna. Thank God, I was
lucky; I plugged in to
Judaism."
How does he know if Luba-
vitcher Hasidism doesn't rep-
resent another way station
in the search for self? "I
once asked my rabbi about
marriage. How would I know
when I met the right one?
He told me that every soul
is matched. How does one
know? I just know."

Last year, at Yom Kippur
services held in the Luba-
vitchers' Farmington Bais
Chabad student center, Gitel
met Mrs. Yitschak Kagan,
who offered to teach her the
practice of mitzvot.
Gitel attended an "En-
counter With Chabad (Luba-
vitch)" in New York, as well
as brief classes in a Luba-
vitcher girls' school, and as
a result became so rapt a
pupil that Mrs. Kagan mar-
veled at her "meticulous"
adherence.
Dovid's interest in Judaism
had been even more tenuous.
Not until he was a senior
majoring in American
studies at the University of
Buffalo did he come in con-
tact with Chabad, through a
course in mysticism taught
by a Lubavitcher rabbi.
The fact that Dovid took
the course as a lark didn't
trouble the rabbi, Noson
Gurary, who "got the fire
going," Dovid said.

I'm afraid something is
really wrong with me. I have
everything a woman is sup-
posed to want - a very good
marriage, nice children, a
lovely home and financial
security. I'm healthy, attrac-
tive and reasonably intelli-
gent. My friends envy me.
None of them know that I
am miserable most of the
time.
My husband says he will be
glad to pay for a psychiatrist
if that's what I want, but I'm
not sure I need one. Lately
I've gone to some lectures
and read some books that I
think may have helped a
little. Maybe I should keep
on trying to work things out
by myself. What do you
think?

You don't have a problem,
your son does. Your son's
problem is that he has par-
ents who think misbehavior
is unimportant. If you want
to get your sister off your
back, and have the chance
to prevent future trouble for
your son, call Jewish Family

and your wife could find out
some interesting things about
kids there.

we don't. Our 16-year-old boy

there is something wrong
just because of the tickets
and because at a kids' party
at her house, our boy took
some liquor from their cab-
