bolic of the strength Israel
derives in the struggle for
security.
Lewis Grossman, 1974 cam-
paign chairman, presided;
his co-chairman, William
Davidson, introduced the
guest speaker; and Merle
Harris assisted in enlisting
contributors to the cam:
paign.
Many of the participants
in the meeting doubled their
1973 gifts, and a generous
response marked the contin-
uing advance campaign ef-
fort to relieve Israel of many
responsibilities involving aid
to incoming immigrants.
Taking place on the day
of the funeral of David Ben-
Gurion, the gathering stood
in tribute to the departed
leader.
Harman referred to the
legacy of Ben-Gurion, to the
courage that stemmed from
the architect of the Jewish
state. He pointed to the foun-
dations for Jewish statehood
that existed before 1948 and
declared that "in 1948 Ben-
Gurion formalized the fact
of Israel's existence."
In an historical analysis
of Zionist efforts to establish
the Jewish state, Harman
said it was to end defense-
lessness, to break open a
door through which Jews
could enter into a free exist-
ence as a people, and to as-
sure functioning under free
conditions for Jewish culture,
civilization and faith.
Describing the great dan-
gers that were overcome in
the Yom Kippur War, Har-
man said that, in spite of
the tragedies that were im-
posed upon the land and the
people, 4,500 new settlers—
most of them from the Soviet
Union — arrived in October
and nearly as many more in
November.
He said that the readiness
of American Jewry to re-
lieve Israel of the social
service obligations in Israel,
by assuming responsibilities
for new settlers and the
health and welfare costs, is
a major contributing factor
of assistance to the imperiled
state under present condi-
tions.
"The solidarity you show
is indispensable and an ur-
gent factor in our gaining
strength to win," Harman
said.
He referred to the status
of Jerusalem by asking "Who
is respecting the h o 1 y
places?" He pointed to the
new status acquired for the
religions in Israel under Is-
raeli administration and de-
clared: "We removed war
from the Holy City and it is
now what its name implies
—the City of Peace."
Israel wants peace and is
ready to make concessions,
he said, but the end result
depends upon the Arabs see-
ing "a place for Israel" in
the Middle East. "If they
do," he added, "we'll have
peace. The alternative is a
continuing struggle."
While several thousand of
the 1973 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign contributors have al-
ready been enrolled as ad-
vance givers for the 1974
campaign, there are thou-
sands yet to be enrolled.
Grossman made the plea
that the large number of the
unsolicited should be reach-
ed promptly to assure for
Israel the minimum aid that
could be given by
Jewry.

at Cong. Beth Achim. Monday are, from left: Mandell L.
Berman, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation; Avra-
ham, Harman, speaker; William Davidson, AJC-IEF co-
chairman, and Lewis Grossman, chairman.
