Eliraz was born in Jeru-
salem and is a graduate of
the Hebrew University in
philosophy and Hebrew liter-
ature. He has studied theater
in Paris on a special

the Sorbonne on a grant
from the French government.
Author of novels, stories
and plays, which have been
staged in Israel, England,
France and the U. S., he has
written librettos for two
operas, one - of which —
"Masada-1967"—will be pro-
duced during the 1973 Israeli
Festival.
Eliraz has won a number
of literary prizes and has
published articles and stories
in many Hebrew literary
periodicals.

Volunteers Ready
Several area women have
volunteered their services
for the May 5 Channel 56
auction. The fifth annual
benefit is again chaired by
Mrs. Irving Friedman, who
directed last year's auction
and brought in a total of
$362,652. This year's goal is
$500,000.
She and vice chairman,
Mrs. Richard Keramedjian,
gave the volunteers a sales
pitch on how to approach
merchants for donations. Do-
nations are tax deductible,
must have a minimum value
of $25 and must be new.

and Mrs. Joseph Z. Neder-
lander hosted a luncheon and
training meeting for volun-
teers at the Fisher Theater.

Rabbi Solomon Gruskin,
Jewish chaplain at Ypsilanti
State Hospital, will chair a
panel when Michigan clergy
meet Monday to discuss the
role of the church or syna-
gogue in meeting responsibil-
ities to mentally ill and/or
mentally retarded parishion-
ers.
The all-day workshop will
be held at Sacred Heart
Seminary, 2701 W. Chicago.
The session starts at 10 a.m.
Sponsors are the Archdio-
cese of Detroit, Jewish Com-
munity Council of Metropoli-
tan Detroit, Michigan Council
of Churches and the Michi-
gan Department of Mental
Health.
"Recent studies of the
clients served in one DMH
agency indicate that about
95 per cent identify with one
of the major religious
faiths," said Fr. Stanley
Kukulski, Catholic chaplain
at Northville State Hospital.
Opening remarks at the
conference will be ,presented
by state mental health direc-
tor Dr. E. Gordon Yudashkin.
Also on the program will
be Dr. Robert Segal, program
director for social work at
the Institute for the Study of
Mental Retardation and Re-
lated Disabilities, University
of Michigan. He will moder-
ate a panel on "The Impact
of the Church on the Men-
tally Retarded and Their
Families."
Panelists will include Mrs.
Moe Mittledorf of the Parents
Association for Jewish Resi-
dential Care Barton Traines
and Cantor Arthur Asher, di-
rector of religious education
at Temple Israel.
Mrs. Mittledorf will discuss
how the synagogue has
helped her, and Traines, a
young retarded man, will de-
scribe the meaning a reli-
gious education program had
for him. Cantor Asher will
outline the Hebrew religious
education program at Tem-
ple Israel.
