TEL AVIV — Twenty - five
per cent of all women in Is-
rael, more than 250,000, have
not completed the fourth
grade of elementary school.
These semi-literate, under-
privileged immigrants
and
daughters of immigrants
from disadvantaged societies
represent the majority of
mothers of large families in
Israel.
Moetzet Hapoalot-Pioneer
Women has launched the
first nationwide group work
program of its type to bet-
ter equip these women for
their role as wives and moth-
ers in a modern Israeli so-
ciety.
This extensive new grass
roots program is reaching
into the hearts of the city
slum neighborhoods and un-
derprivileged "development"
towns, according to Mrs.
Beba Ideison, general sec-
retary of the Moetzet Hapoa-
lot-Pioneer Women.

A major emphasis is placed
on enhancing the self-image
of the women — with regard
to their families and the
community.

Sessions are held in the
clubrooms and community
centers of the Moetzet Hapoa-
lot-Pioneer Women or the
local Histradrut building.
Nursery facilities are avail-
able so that mothers can
bring their pre-school age
children with them.
The new effort is headed
by a young Israeli psycholo-
gist, Shoshana Sharni, who
studied at Ohio State and

Columbia universities. The
program is aided with a

grant from the Demographic
Institute of the Prime Min-
ister's Office.
Implementation is based
in part on the vacation pro-
ject operated principally by
Moetzet Hapoalot during the
past summer, which reached
more than 5,000 mothers of
large deprived families. These
form the nucleus of the first
groups in the current year-
round program.
