Role of U.S. Cagers in Israel

BY HASKELL COHEN

(Cet/Fright 1972, JTA,

Another American wrote
his home-town newspaper
that he was playing In the
"Israeli Professional Basket-
ball League" and his home-
town journal published the
statement. As yet there
haven't been any repercus-
sions to this bright bit of in-
formation but it's conceivable
that if the story falls into
the hands of the Federation
of International Basketball
AssocIations, Israel's Nation.

be declared ineligible for in-
ternational competition.

tries and is inclined to aid
in a matter of this nature, so
don't be surprised if Jerusa-
lem Hapoel suddenly be-
comes an entity in the Na-
tional loop.

The Basketball Federation
is endeavoring to rectify its
untenable position by institut-
ing a new rule effective next
season whereby all Ameri-
can basketball players must
put in a year of residence be-
fore they become eligible to
participate in league play.
It's extremely unlikely that
many of the clubs in the Na-
tional circuit will underwrite
the expenses of ineligible
players for a full year. Like-
wise a few "basketball jocks"
from the States will be an-
xious to sit out a full year
before being permitted to
perform.
Frankly the future success
of Israel's basketball pro-
gram may depend upon a
strict interpretation of this
new resolution. Israel's
junior players now moving
up into the varsity bracket
are many and qualified. It
would be a shame to thwart

in the United States.

Top College Hockey
Teams Will Meet

Olympia Stadium, in con-
junction with Michigan Tech,
announced that the eighth
annual Great Lakes Invita-
tional College Hockey Tour-
nament will be held Dec. 27
and 28 at Olympia Stadium.
Tournament Manager Jack
Paterson, who is also the De-
' troit Red Wings chief U.S.
scout,' is bringing in four

perennial college hockey

powers: defending NC A A
champion Boston University,
defending GLI Champion and
host school Michigan Tech,
Harvard University and the
University of Michigan.
The opening round will find
Harvard facing Michigan,
and Boston University tang-
ling with Michigan Tech. The
championship and consola-
tion rounds will be played
the following night.

alone.
