Dr. Jacob Neusnet% professor of
religious studies at Brown Uni-
versity, will speak on The Impli-
cations of the Holocaust" at th"
16th annual Midrasha Institute 8:15
p.m. Thursday at the LaMed Audi-
torium of the United Hebrew
Schools.
Theme of the institute is The
Aftermath of the Holocaust: Israel,
Judaism and the Diaspora." Other
lectures are scheduled for May 4.
9 and 16.
Dr. Neusner, who has written a
number of books, as well as count-
less articles and essays, is a
graduate in rabbinical studies from
the Jewish Theological Seminary
and holds a PhD from Columbia
University. He has taught at Dart-
mouth College, Brandeis Univer-
sity. the University of Wisconsin"
and Columbia, and is a member
of the National Foundation for
Jewish Culture's advisory council
and on the editorial board of the
periodical Judaism.

Clarkson Candidate
for Re-Election
Judge S. James Clarkson, dis-
trict judge of the 46th Judicial
District, Oakland County, an-
nounced he will seek re-election to
a six-year term.
Judge Clarkson was first elected
to his present office in January
1969. He filed as an incumbent
under a new constitutional proviso
which waives the necessity of
signed petitions and allows the de-
signation of incumbent on the bal-
lot.
During his term, the Youthful
Trainee Program for first time of-
t fenders was initiated under pro-
bation department supervision.
The Adult Term of Adjournment
program, similar to the Youthful
Trainee Program, was inaugurat-
ed in Judge Clarkson's court and
permits first time offenders to

earn a no-conviction record by
volunteering for community ser-
vice such as clean up and debris

removal or work in the public
library.
Judge Clarkson served four
terms as mayor of Southfield.
Bells Ringing in Israel
as Telephone Use Grows
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The com-
munications minister reported that
there are 19 telephones in Israel
for every 100 people, a higher per
capita rate than in France or It-
aly and almost equal to that of
England.
The national telephone network
grew by 15 per cent in the past
year, .a near world record accord-

Arab Students Disrupt Jewish Confab in Belgium

JWV to Give Luncheon
for 'Forgotten' Veterans
The annual kosher luncheon at
Battle Creek Veterans Hospital is
planned by the Department of
Michigan and its Ladies Auxiliary
April 30.
Battle Creek VA Hospital, which
houses mentally disturbed, often
has been called "the Forgotten
Hospital" because of its distance
from the Detroit metro area.
Tom Tannis and past Depart-
ment President Dorothy Cohen,
co-chairmen, seek volunteers to
help at the party. Those planning
to attend will meet at JWV head-
quarters at 8 a.m. when car pools',
will be arranged.

JWV Commander Meets
With Waldheim, Laird
WASHINGTON — A delegation
representing the Jewish War
Veterans of the U.S.A. vigorously
protested the Soviet Union's treat-
ment of Jews to UN Secretary
General Kurt Waldheim.
Led by National Commander
Jerome D. Cohen of Brooklyn, who
had recently visited the Soviet
Union, the delegation reported that
the secretary general expressed
interest in the plight of Jews in
,he USSR.
Commander Cohen also met with
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird
to report on his extensive trip and
survey of NATO, SHAPE. the
Sixth Fleet and the Middle East.
Cohen urged the secretary to
consider the use of liberty ports
in the eastern Mediterranean as a
substantial booster for U.S. naval
personnel. Among these would be
the port of Haifa.
