Nationwide interest was drawn
to the celebration of the 70th birth-
day of the Lubavitcher Rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson.
At the celebration in Brooklyn,
at which messages were read from
notables throughout the world, the
eminent novelist, Herman Wouk,
displayed the congratulatory letter
from President Nixon to Rabbi
Abraham Shemtov, director of
Lubavitch activities in Philadel-
phia. With them in the photo are
Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, Lubavitch
national public relations director,
and on the extreme right, Rabbi
Berl Shemtov, director of Luba-
vitch institutions in Michigan.
The photo of the Lubavitch
Rebbe shown below, with Rabbi
Chaim Chadakoff in the back-
ground, was taken while Wouk was
leaving the Rebbe's sanctuary. The
Rebbe as a rule does not allow
himself to be photographed.
In his message to the Rebbe,
President Nixon stated:
"Your dedication to the teaching
of your faith and your emphasis on
vocational training have made the
Lubavitch movement an asset not
only to the Jewish religion, but to
